Job Overview
The Caregiver is responsible for the direct care of residents, the maintenance of the facility, and the facilitation of relationships with external agencies during their assigned shift. Caregivers receive compensation in the form of an hourly wage, paid leave, and paid training. They are expected to exercise sound judgment within the established group home values and follow the Oregon Administrative Rules for 24-hour care group homes.
The Caregiver is entrusted with the care of up to five adults with developmental disabilities. This includes the provision of personal care, assistance with hygiene, instruction in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), planning and preparing menus that adhere to dietary restrictions, accurate and timely documentation of medication administration, financial transactions, and behavioral incidents, as well as the transportation and accompaniment of residents to community events.
Responsibilities
- Provide care for residents during assigned days and hours, including assisting other staff in planning, preparing, and serving meals following residents' special dietary needs, menu planning, grocery shopping, and adhering to the allocated budget; provide personal care as needed, including administering topical medicines, nail care, dispensing medications, and following physicians’ orders.
- Prepare and provide modified diets, such as thickened liquids and pureed food, following diet plans and recommendations from residents’ medical professionals.
- Maintain required written records on medications, diet, behavior incidents, financial management, and progress notes. Incident Reports (IRs) are mandatory for injuries, accidents, unusual incidents, and emergency OIS holds.
- Plan social, educational, and recreational activities and coordinate their implementation. Participate in agency and house social events.
- Accompany residents to social, educational, recreational, and religious events as needed.
- Provide transportation to events, including work, as required.
- Assist residents with all ADLs and encourage self-help to the greatest extent feasible. Instruct residents to maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of their rooms and bathrooms, and share responsibilities for cleaning and organizing common living spaces.
- Participate in mandatory monthly staff meetings and training in nutrition, sustainability, emergency preparedness, resource management, etiology of various disabilities, Individual Support Plan (ISP) training, certification in essential competencies for residential staff, and updates to federal and state legislation and regulations affecting group homes.
Qualifications
- Oregon Driver's License: A safe driving record for the past three years.
- Clear criminal history checks: Required at the time of hiring and biennially.
- Certification in essential residential competencies within 90 days of hiring.
- Abstinence from substance abuse at the time of hiring and throughout employment. Pre-screening is conducted at the applicant's expense and reimbursed on the subsequent paycheck.
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications or certification upon the next available class. Arranged and paid for by Bridges Enterprise LLC.
- Sufficient literacy to understand written and oral orders, communicate with residents, peer staff, residents' families, supervisors, and other appropriate individuals, and respond appropriately to emergencies. Strong writing skills are necessary for record-keeping.
- There is a preference for two or more years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, but training will be provided.
- Good personal hygiene and appropriate work attire are essential. Low-cut tops and shorts are prohibited.
