Special Education Teacher
Life Skills
Job Purpose:
To fulfill the educational requirements of students with disabilities as outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) through the development and implementation of the individualized education plan (IEPs) for students with learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities by meeting each student’s academic, social, behavioral, and functional needs to include significant / low incidence disabilities, by fostering positive relationships with colleagues through professional collaboration and active participation in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and engaging parents with meaningful communication to support student success.
Qualifications:
At a minimum, candidates must hold or be eligible for certification by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board endorsed in the content area as required per certification.
Position Type:

- Salary: $60,380 to $86,900

- Reporting to: Building Principal of assigned school or a designated by Director of Special Services
Job Responsibilities and Duties
- Work across all levels to provide appropriate speech-language services for students eligible for services under IDEA, and or part of Child Find activities.
- Work with students exhibiting the full range of disabilities (from mild or moderate to severe and/or multiple disorders).
- Provide services on an individual, small-group, or classroom basis.
- Provide extended school year or extended school day services as needed
- Collaborate with and train other professionals and parents to facilitate students' academic, communication, and social skills in an educational environment.
- Complete documentation as required by federal, state, and local agencies.
- Write reports and participate in annual review conferences.
- Serve as consultants to other educators and related professionals.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise interns, practicums, and student teachers, as assigned
- As assigned, supervise special education pararpofessionals, by providing programming direction, developing growth goals, and communicating periodical feedback.
Essential Functions of Position:
- Participate as a member of problem-solving teams (e.g. intervention, IEP, PLC, etc.)
- Particiapted with screening and diagnostic evaluations for students referred for evaluation of suspected IDEA
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs
- Plan for specially designed instruction, supports, modifications, and accommodations
- Provide direct services to students with disabilities
- Provide case management for students with disabilities.
- Strong organization and planning skills for accurate and complete record-keeping
- Excellent listening, writing, and verbal communication skills
- Maintain the necessary confidentiality of information as it relates to students and staff
- Meet all compliance requirements as set forth in local, state, and federal rules and regulations

Knowledge:
Working knowledge of the functions of the school setting to include district policies, procedures and strategic plan as well as general duties of an educational professional to include but not limited to supervision of students, child development, managing student health plans, and implementing district safety practices.
General Knowledge IDEA, ADA Section 504, Wyoming rules, and district policies and procedures that govern the operation of special education programs and services provided to students with disabilities.
Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles, and methods of special education through the lens of a teacher, by knowledge acquisition general and extended standards and skill implementation of high leveraged practices for the purpose of supporting student learning: academically, socially, behaviorally, and functionally.
Skills:
Implementation of the individual education program and/or evaluation process
- Coordinate, teach, and supervise IEP programming
- Plan, develop, modify, and prepare curriculum (lessons, activities, and assessments) for classroom and/or individualized instruction
- Instruction includes curriculum aligned with appropriate state standards and assessment
- Specially designed instruction may include, communication, basic literacy, academic development, social skills, transition, behavior, and functional skills
- Collaborate, implement, and monitor behavior management and social skills systems as well as maintain records on student performance
- Supplemental supports my include modifications, accommodations, adaptive equipments, and assistive technology
- Meet state requirments to administer regular and alternative state assessments
- Implement individual educational plans across various educational settings: homebound, self-contained, individualized, and inclusion settings for example
- Types of programming may include whole class, group work, individualized work, state assessments, and provision of extended school year services for example
- Complete and maintain MANDT certification and implement the skills, methods and philosophies as prescribed by MANDT
Case management of students with disabilities including the planning and deployment of the IEP process related to the their responsibilities: PLAAFP, Goals, Progress Reports for example
- Ensure through communication and collaboration that all necessary information for IEP and MDT meetings is gathered and prepared
- Use web based IEP program for building, reporting, and updating IEP student files.
- Clerical assignments including, but not limited to, filing, record keeping, word processing, copying documents, and data entry
- Maintain confidentiality of educational records, privledge conversations, and identification of students with disabilities
- Collaborate with regular education teachers for the delivery of specially designed instruction: pull out, inclusion, consultation, co-teaching, homebound, etc.
- Frequent communication with parents, service providers, general education teachers, paraprofessionals, special education peers, and building administration
- Communicate and collaborate with community, county, state, and national agencies related to wrap-around and/or respite care
- Participate in all required staff meetings, IEP meetings, and staff development activities
- Required staff development activities include all those that are assigned to you by your supervisor
Work Conditions:
Primary workspace will be located within assigned district building(s). Duties are typically indoors and occasionally outdoors, which may include unpredictable weather conditions. This position may involve sitting, walking, and standing throughout the day to include moving room to room and maneuvering in crowded hallways. Travel may be required within the district or outside of district for activities with students, and professional activities or meetings. The noise level is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together. This position requires accurate perception of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, and ability to provide written and oral information. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
