What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Day Camp Counselor position at BridgeWays AL Coosa County?
This a great opportunity for college students majoring in education, athletics, or outdoor education, to name a few. Teachers or other school personnel are also highly encouraged to apply. Previous day camp or overnight camp experience is preferred, but not required.
POSITION: Summer Day Camp Counselor (one of whom will be our lifeguard too)

ABOUT:
BridgeWays Summer Day Camp program serves children entering Pre-K4 through 5th grades. Our average attendance is 18 to 25 campers per day. Children and staff alike will enjoy a broad range of experiences and activities, making friends and learning new things about the world around them - all in a safe and secure environment.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Do like to have in-depth conversations with kids about their favorite bugs? Least favorite food? Are you able to encourage them to try new things? This may be the job for you!
- Are you willing to have conversations with campers about why their words can be hurtful? or positive? Have a conversation about campers working as a team? Supporting each other through new experiences? This may be the job for you!
- Can you assist with planning and carrying out activities, while guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills?
- Can you provide consistent support to campers and fellow counselors even on the hottest, most exhausting and/or frustrating days?
- You'll need to ensure compliance with program plans, camp policies & procedures.
- You'll lead campers in a wide range of activities from arts & crafts, field sports, hiking, singing camp songs, reading, baking/cooking, swimming and more.
- You'll help to create a fun and rewarding environment by maintaining the well-being and safety of campers.
- You will ensure campers are supervised at all times and guide them on understanding daily routines, clean up tasks and expectations.
- Enthusiastic participation in all program areas, while serving as a positive role model and mentor through your attitude and behavior is a must.
- Active, engaged supervision of campers is required at all times, but even more during field trips and times we are away from our program center.
- Can you maintain a high standard of communication and participate in verbal and written evaluations as requested?

ATTRIBUTES:
- Must be outgoing, enthusiastic and personable to create an engaging atmosphere for our kids.
- Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors on a daily basis. We encounter heat, rain, bugs, mud and more.
- Strong communication (with campers and co-workers) and time management skills are required.
- Must demonstrate sound problem-solving techniques and being able to "switch gears" quickly.
- Posses high motivation, strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Be physically able to complete CPR and 1st aid certification which is provided by BridgeWays.
- Pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
- Have clean driving record if your employment is to include driving our 15-passenger vans.
TIME COMMITMENT:
- Staff training starts mid-May (a few evenings and a Saturday)
- Day camp starts in late May and ends in early August
- Day camp is typically held Monday - Friday, with the exception of a 3-day overnight trip in late June/early July
- We potentially care for campers from 7am to 6pm on Day Camp days
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- Physical aspects of this position include the ability to carry and lift 30 pounds, walking long distances, hiking, daily exposure to the sun and bugs. Our kids play hard, the same is expected from our counselors.
- BridgeWays staff t-shirts provided.
- Lifeguard certification extremely helpful, but not required. We will train the right candidate.
- Free snacks and occasional meals!
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary
Pay: $11.00 - $12.00 per hour
Expected hours: 15 – 40 per week
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
