Job Summary
The Controls & Automation Technician will implement automation strategies to improve process and packaging operations at our manufacturing facilities. Implementation of new technology, and optimization of existing automation platforms, will ensure continuous improvement across the operations. The successful candidate will also maintain awareness on new and emerging technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Works with outside contractors and vendors on installations and implementations.
- Collaborates with the Engineering, Maintenance, and Information Systems teams to optimize processes, applications, and technologies.
- Develops process reviews, strategies, and deployments in alignment with IEC 61131-3 and PLCopen programming standards.
- Maintains data integrity and plant automation network security through collaboration with the Information Systems Department.
- Manages accurate system documentation and provides training to both operations and maintenance departments.
- Manages control systems, including design, implementation, optimization, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
- Develops facility backup strategies and disaster recovery plans for controls networks.
- Becomes a subject matter expert on technologies within operations/functional areas, advising and monitoring instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, SCADA management, and more.
- Provides timely responses to automation trouble calls, diagnosing and remedying problems with root cause analysis and documentation.
- Performs start-up and shutdown operations involving energizing and de-energizing equipment/systems.
- Maintains a working knowledge of equipment and plant operations.
- Operates power tools, hand tools, electrical meters, and boom lifts as required.
- Diagnoses and remedies electrical problems, collaborating with OEM support for control system updates in older machinery.
Requirements:
- A degree in Engineering or equivalent technical degree and relevant work experience.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a similar role in a 24/7 continuous manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with the Food and Ingredient industry is an asset.
- Systems technology skills and experience in manufacturing systems networks, architectures, applications, human machine interfaces, automation control systems, control networks, and instrumentation.
- The ability to analyze data, recognize detrimental trends, and impact company costs, regulatory issues, or risk management.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, listening, and negotiation skills for effective relationships with contractors, suppliers, peers, team members, superiors, consultants, and professionals.
- Judgment skills to balance company, division, and department goals and objectives.
- A desire for learning, building relationships, and collaborating to achieve desired outcomes.
