Pulmonary Vascular Disease Lab
Job Summary
The Research Laboratory Manager works under the direction of the Principal Investigator(s) and Clinical Research Manager to complete the laboratory requirements of the clinical research projects. Projects will focus on studying and treating Pulmonary Vascular Disease, primarily Pulmonary Hypertension but extending to other conditions such as Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), etc. with investigational drugs and / or devices. The laboratory manager performs full scope of management responsibilities in a research laboratory, including performing qualitative and quantitative tests using various lab instruments and /or manual methods on blood, plasma, urine, CSF, and/or body fluids following standard operating procedures, fiscal/budget management for independent/investigator-initiated projects, supervision of biorepository activities in concert with the research manager, inventory management, etc. The research laboratory manager also independently performs highly sophisticated experiments, participates with the principal investigator in the design of experimental protocols, and interprets experimental results in conference with other researchers.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities
- Complies with all established standards and practices pertaining to test performance, including, but not limited to, laboratory procedures, hospital procedures, CAP, JCAHO and CLIA guidelines, and within the institution’s policies regarding compliance.
- Performs quality control procedures as needed and established by protocol and analyzes data collected from these activities to make judgments on observed results and take appropriate action to ensure that accuracy and precision are maintained.
- Identifies abnormal patient results; recognizes factors that affect measurements/results, and takes appropriate action (if applicable) to ensure samples integrity.
- Performs and documents equipment maintenance, calibration, quality control, and other trouble shooting procedures.
- Data entry, export and maintenance within the RedCap and RPDR systems as well as platforms contracted by pharmaceutical collaborators.
- Recognizes equipment malfunctions, documents problems as may be required, performs trouble-shooting and repair in accordance with established guidelines. Alerts Research Manager/biomedical engineering/designee as needed.
- Monitors reagents and supplies; orders as needed, or communicates need to appropriate person to maintain appropriate inventory of necessary supplies.
- Documents laboratory errors using hospital Safety Reporting System; informs supervisor/clinical research manager/designee on process improvement.
- May participate in all aspects of grant writing and proposals.
- Participates in the evaluation, validation, and/or implementation of new methodologies.
- Acts as backup for urgent laboratory-based requests when Dr. Waxman or his Research Manager are not available.
- Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab.
- Assists with Data Use Agreement (DUA) and Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) IRB requests, including training staff/faculty on these tasks as needed.
- Complete day-of ambient and weekly batched frozen samples shipments to outside collaborators.
- Supports and assists coworkers as needed to ensure the best possible patient care; able to work independently while also functioning as part of a team.
- Contributes to scientific literature and may present the results at hospital and outside meetings.
- Trains research assistant staff on lab procedures as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
- BS Required, MS preferred. Minimum of 3 years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Experience working in Epic or other electronic medical record (EMR) system and fundamental knowledge of the conduct of clinical trials is preferred.
Experience in an academic or laboratory research setting 3-5 years required
- Must be able to perform day to day responsibilities duties as described above with regular and ongoing training and supervision. Attains and can demonstrate fundamental knowledge and is somewhat proficient in some or all of the following areas: MGB, ICH/GCP, FDA policy / guidance / regulation; an understanding of the IRB submission & approval process; PI Initiated / Multi-Center Trials; protocol design and development.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, maintain confidentiality of information, demonstrate good decision-making and judgment and have attention to detail and follow-through skills.
- Demonstrated organization and time management/prioritization skills with the ability to work independently are required.
- Must be proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft applications and databases.
