What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histology Technician II position at Brigham and Women's Hospital?
Summary
Responsible for preparing tissue specimens by treating them with chemicals, slicing, and mounting them on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.
Essential Functions
Performs specimen collection, accessioning, and logging routines.
Assists pathologists with tissue grossing procedures.
Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides.
Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures, such as oiling and cleaning microtomes according to schedule, recording instrument temperatures, changing the processor, and updating staining solutions.
Ensures aseptic techniques and observes health safety protocols during cleanup procedures to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
Observes hospital and laboratory policies and safety practices while maintaining a safe, clean, and prepared work area.
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Graduate Certificate Histology preferred
Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree?
Licenses and Credentials
Experience
Clinical or Histology experience 1-2 years required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic histotechnique to include fixation, decalcifications, processing, embedding, routine and special stains and frozen sections.
- Must be able to perform certain special stains (i.e. Oil Red O).
- Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
- Participates in relevant continuing education programs.
