Job Summary

MT’s perform and evaluate complex laboratory tests in various areas of the clinical laboratory. This position requires an in-depth understanding of complex precision instruments and a variety of automated and electronic equipment. MT’s work with minimal supervision and have the necessary background to recognize problems, be proficient in troubleshooting, and problem-solving. MT’s may be key operators for various instruments, aiding the supervisor in training, advanced maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting. They may assist in developing and modifying procedures and programs to ensure the accuracy of a test. They perform all required Quality Control procedures, document results accurately, and follow through appropriately on all outliers. They notify the supervisor of any unusual or unexpected results and of all existing and/or potential problems of any nature, utilizing the appropriate laboratory and hospital documentation forms. They report all critical values to the appropriate person and complete the required documentation. MT’s follow all organizational, departmental, and section policies, such as Universal Precautions, Fire Safety, QA documentation, Hazardous Waste, etc. Medical technologists maintain records in a complete, accurate, and legible manner. MT’s assist with the orientation of new staff members, students, residents, fellows, etc., as directed. MT’s assume the duties required for the smooth operation of the lab.

Follows established hospital and departmental precautions and procedures in the performance of all job duties to ensure a safe work environment for patients and others, including as appropriate:
Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene
Demonstrates use of two patient identifiers
Demonstrates effective communication “hand-offs” between providers, shifts, departments, etc.
Demonstrates use of proper precautions, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment
Testing
Accurately performs and expeditiously reports laboratory tests according to Standard Operating Procedures. Consistently responds to stat orders and assists others with workload fluctuations. Reports critical values in accordance with laboratory policy.
Quality Control
Consistently performs quality control procedures and appropriate instrument checks, including equipment maintenance and repairs. Reviews, takes appropriate action, and documents according to Standard Operating Procedures.
Training/Education
Assumes responsibility for continuing education and competency assessment. Participates in the laboratory quality assurance program, including QA/QI, proficiency testing, and procedure review (new and annual).
Professional Expectations
Consistently recognizes and takes initiative for performing tasks related to departmental operations without supervision. Assists others to achieve overall departmental productivity and efficiency. Asks supervisor for tasks or projects when time allows.
