Assistant Professor of Geology

Brigham Young University
Provo, UT Full Time
POSTED ON 1/13/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/9/2025

The Department of Geological Sciences at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position starting Fall Semester 2025. We welcome the applications of candidates from all subdisciplines and across all ranks. An interest in and ability to contribute to our summer field course is a plus. A Ph.D. at the time of appointment is required, and postdoctoral or other faculty experience is a plus. Implementation of a vigorous, externally funded research program is expected, as is regular publication in top-tier journals. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their field of expertise as well as undergraduate geology courses as assigned.

Excellent research infrastructure exists within the department, including modern wavelength-dispersive XRF, pXRF, XRD, ICP-OES instruments, a stable isotope laboratory, and a wide array of field equipment, including active- and passive-source seismic arrays. Excellent computational facilities are also available within the department and university.

The department currently consists of ten professorial faculty and two professional faculty and offers B.S. and M.S. degree programs. The department offers three majors: Geology, Environmental Geology, and Earth and Space Science Education. Minors in Geology and Geology Education are also offered. The department has a strong tradition of field-based teaching and research both locally and internationally, and the campus of BYU is proximal to world-renowned geology of all types. Department strengths include environmental geochemistry, hydrogeology, sedimentology/stratigraphy, petroleum geology and research into emerging energy technologies such as geothermal and carbon capture and storage (CCS), geophysics (shallow and deep), planetary geology, structure and tectonics, and paleontology. Student placement in internships and jobs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is very high, and we enjoy a particularly engaged and passionate alumni group that helps teach, mentor, and advocate for our students.

Applicants should send a curriculum vita, graduate transcripts, a statement of research experience and goals, a description of teaching philosophy, and the names and contact information for three references to the search committee chair, Dr. Sam Hudson, at sam.hudson@byu.edu.  However, to be officially considered, the applicant must also complete an online application at: https://yjobs.byu.edu/

Brigham Young University is an equal opportunity employer. All faculty are required to abide by the University’s Ecclesiastical Conditions of Employment and Dress and Grooming Standards. Successful candidates are expected to support and contribute to the academic and religious missions of the university within the context of the principles and doctrine of the affiliated church.

BYU is committed to hiring faculty members who enthusiastically embrace and energetically advance its unique mission. To this end, please include a one-page mission alignment statement as part of your application that addresses how you might, as a BYU faculty member: (1) live a life of loyalty to Jesus Christ and His restored Church and align yourself with doctrines and teachings declared by living prophets, seers, and revelators; (2) demonstrate intentionality in building faith in Jesus Christ and testimony of His restored gospel among students and others in the BYU community; and (3) teach your subject matter with the Spirit of God and strive to keep it “bathed in the light and color of the restored gospel” (Spencer W. Kimball).
