Brightpoint Community College is seeking applications for a full-time, twelve-month Professional Counselor to support students with disabilities in accessing college resources and obtaining necessary accommodations for academic coursework. Key responsibilities include:
- Interpreting medical and mental health documentation to support the development of instructional accommodation plans based on knowledge of federal and state ADA policies as they relate to post-secondary education and the functional impact of a student’s disabilities in relation to their courses/academic program.
- Meet with students to conduct intake interviews as part of the interactive process of establishing Individual Accommodation Plans (IAP)
- Coordinates communication between faculty, staff, and prospective and enrolled students with disabilities.
- Provide ongoing consultation and technical assistance to facilitate services and accommodations.
- Coordinate testing accommodations with the Testing Center and proctor tests as needed.
- Work with professionals both internal and external to the College to arrange assistive technology and interpretive services as needed.
- Serve on the College’s Care Team by assisting students with resources and referrals to a variety of medical, mental health, and academic support services on campus and in the community.
- Assist students who need crisis management support as needed.
- Provide consultation to faculty and staff on supporting students in the classroom.
- Providing training to faculty and staff at the college, community partners and local high school transition teams regarding ADA and the student accommodation process at Brightpoint.
- Serve on college committees and actively participate in work groups and taskforces when needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
This position may require some evening hours and extended hours of work (day, evening, and weekend) for special college events. This position will primarily work on the Chester campus but may be required to work on the Midlothian campus to provide coverage as needed.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
