What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical/Engineering Technician position at Brilliant Light Power?
Mechanical/Engineering Technician
POSITION SUMMARY
We seek a technician to assembly and test novel thermal and electrical power generators in an engineering laboratory setting requiring predominantly mechanical skills. The power source is based on novel hydrogen chemistry that produces extraordinarily high-power-density plasma from hydrogen containing fuel. The goal to convert emitted plasma optical power into electricity directly using thermophotovoltaic conversion. The system comprises an electromagnetic pump molten metal injection system, an electrical fuel ignition system, and a power converter. The successful candidate will work with a team of engineers, technicians, and fabricators in house as well as effectively manage external resources.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
· Assemble, operate, and perform tests on power systems as part of a team and contribute to solutions of any failure mechanisms.
- Substantial experience at using wrenches and other hand tools as well as power tools such as grinders, sanders, drills, drill presses, torches, mechanical tools, impact wrenches, punches, levels, squares, hand clamps, anvils, band saws, and cutoff saws is required.
- Perform simple cutting, and soldering.
- Welding various metals, cleaning parts, fabricating components into power generators are big positives.
- Knowledge of vacuum systems, power supplies, and gas flow controls and other gas sensing instruments, a plus.
· Ability to perform optical power measurements using power meters and spectrometers and as well as other reaction diagnostics, and plasma product characterizations are a positive.
· The critical elements are to contribute to as a multidiscipline team are the ability to integrate mechanical, vacuum, electrical, and data acquisition systems and the requisite depth and breadth of analytical and prototyping skills, enhanced by creativity, cross‐disciplinary problem solving and intuition, coupled with excellent time and project management capability.
· Work with machinists, fabricators, welders and contract fabrication shops that make the generators to be tested.
· Ability to repair, make minor modifications, and perform some fabrication of sourced parts is a positive.
· Confer with engineers, draftsman, fabricators, welders, vendors, and others to resolve machining, assembly, testing, and data analysis problems.
· Must be able to clearly recognize and communicate component integration challenges that exist and suggest solutions, timelines, and resources required to solve these challenges.
· Must document results with detailed reports as required.
· Must be capable and responsible for running a generator testing station, performing generator component testing, data acquisition, and data analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS
· We are hiring in two categories to add to our team. One role requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with engineering skills and hands‐on mechanical skills and experience is required.
· The other requires at least a high school diploma and at least one of a formal education in the trades or extensive on-job experience.
