Shift : (3) 12 Hour Shifts
Essential Functions
- Participates in patient assessments by determining nursing care needs based upon collection and interpretation of relevant data.
- Recognizes and determines the need for immediate intervention.
- Demonstrates knowledge which enables the following : documentation of patient observations, treatments, patient response to treatment and nursing care utilizing the nursing process, participates actively in treatment and assisting with procedures.
- Assists with development / revision of the plan of care by providing data and identifying potential goals and intervention for review by the RN.
- Communicates with the appropriate clinical staff on the status of a patient if a significant change has occurred.
- Implements the identified plan under the supervision of the RN, ensuring tasks have been completed.
- Aware of the patient's progress and goals as demonstrated by documentation in the medical records.
- Organizes workload and prioritizes responsibilities to ensure quality patient care is delivered in a time efficient manner.
- Attain knowledge and competence that reflects current nursing practice and performs only those nursing skills which they are competent to perform in accordance with legal boundaries and facility policies and procedures.
- Documents assessments, procedures, patient / family education, and the communication of information to appropriate members of the healthcare team in a timely manner.
- Provides and assesses effectiveness of patient and family education under the direction of the registered nurse within the scope of practice as defined by law.
Unit Specific Responsibilities :
LDR Delivery
Open rooms for expected patients
Place on EFM
Start IV and obtain admission bloodwork
Assist RN with admission process
Set up epidural equipment / bring supplies
Set up tables for vaginal deliveries (tech also set up delivery tables)
Set up and scrub for extensive vaginal laceration repairs.
Break down beds for vaginal deliveries
Assist with pushing as needed
Assist RN after delivery with mom and baby
Provide care to newborn after initial resuscitation or under Pediatric provider
OR Delivery
Follows established guidelines related to aseptic technique
Consistently demonstrates knowledge of instrument usage, assembly of instrument sets, case set up procedures.
Open room for C / S procedures,
Obtains appropriate items for procedures
Checks case cart for accuracy of on-hand supplies
Set up and scrub for double set-up delivery
Set up and scrub for extensive vaginal laceration repairs
Set up and scrub for c / s
Set up and scrub for pp tubal ligation
Set up and scrub for pp dilation & curettage.
Set up and scrub for emergency pp / cesarean hysterectomy
General Post Delivery / Procedure
Breaks down instruments set up and Clean up room when needed
Wash up recovery patients.
Complete fundal checks and monitor bleeding
Clean instruments to prepare for sterilization
Follows protocol for transport of instruments to sterile processing / pick up instruments
Prepare postpartum room Stock / Restock Room
Provides direct patient care including medication, start, maintain and discontinue IVs, treatments, and personal care.
Documents assessments, procedures, patient / family education, and the communication of information to appropriate members of the healthcare team in a timely manner
Newborn Care
Vital signs, weight, footprint
Clean up / bathe baby
Hearing Screens
Prepare cribs
Assist MD with frenectomies, circumcisions etc.
General Duties
Continue evaluations and documentation on mother / baby dyads
vital signs post recovery period
perineal care
ambulation
Transport patients
Stock blanket warmer.
Answer phones, call light, door
Administer outpatient TDAP vaccinations
POC testing -Controls on glucose monitor
Finger stick / heal sticks for glucose
Heel sticks for in / outpatient bilirubin levels
Conduct newborn screening testing
Assist RN as needed
Assist MD as needed
Assist other OB Tech as needed
Assist Secretary as needed.
Qualifications :
Graduated from an accredited School for Licensed Practical Nurses and has an active LPN license from the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health.
Valid CPR Certification from the American Red Cross
