The Pharmacy Technician performs a variety of duties to assist the staff pharmacist. Duties may include ordering, inventory control, preparing iv admixtures, packaging, labeling and distribution of medications and other pharmacy supplies needed for use in the hospital. Also assisting with, and maintaining written and electronic records as required. Works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, practicing under the scope of State and Federal laws and statutes.
Job Requirements:
Registration with the Department of Consumer Protection.
Certified with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (or obtained within 12 months of hire, unless current pharmacy student).
Literate in English, verbal and written communication skills
Ability to perform pharmacy mathematical calculations.
Computer and keypunch knowledge.
Ability to work in a variable environment that will include a rapid pace, frequently changing conditions, and work related distractions.
Moderate exposure to hazardous substances found in the Pharmacy.
Essential Job Functions:
Maintains working knowledge of pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and common symbols.
Fills drug requisitions for patient care locations.
Prepares emergency drug kits and trays with appropriate controls.
Restocks Pyxis automated dispensing machines accurately.
Delivers medications and iv preparations to patient care locations.
Communicates with nurses and pharmacists for delivery of medications using tube system.
Receives, delivers or restocks controlled substances with appropriate controls.
Identifies and segregates short dated and out dated medications.
Maintains the security and perpetual inventory of controlled substances.
Ensures all IV admixtures are prepared using USP<797> standards
Maintains cleanliness of iv compounding areas using USP<797> standards.
Resolves Pyxis discrepancies and contacts help desk or Carefusion when unable to resolve
Repackages pharmaceuticals with appropriate controls.
Participates in pharmacy performance improvement plan including unit inspections, temperature monitoring, and area cleaning.
Handles and mixes hazardous substances according to USP<800> standards.
Actively assists in training of new employees and students.
Maintains assigned area in a neat and clean manner.
Attends staff meetings while on duty. Reviews minutes if absent.
Practices safety first by participation in morning safety huddles and reporting issues using the hospital’s electronic reporting system.
Performs selected clerical duties.
Completes all mandatory education assignments
Education/Self Development
Completes all mandatory educational assignments on time. Submits education record to Pharmacy Manager prior to annual appraisal.
Maintains working knowledge of pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and common symbols.
Provides training, development, and education for new staff, students, and visitors.
Post certification, maintains necessary level of continuing education.
Participates in hospital and/or community educational programs.
Educational / Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma. Associates degree preferred. Prior experience preferred.
State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:
Certified Pharmacy Technician within 24 months of hire (unless current UCONN pharmacy student). Certified Registration with the Department of Consumer Protection.
Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:
General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
Special Requirements:
Six months learning time.
Physical Requirements:
Considerable physical activity - i.e. a combination of walking, sitting, bending, lifting, and standing, throughout the work period. Typically on feet much of the day. Manual dexterity requisite.

Central Pharmacy and Patient Care locations. Ability to work in a variable environment that will include a rapidpace, frequently changing conditions, and work related distractions. Moderate exposure to hazardous substances found in the Pharmacy.
Cognitive Requirements:
