A registered professional nurse with demonstrated clinical skills for assessing, planning and implementing nursing practice based on the philosophy and objectives of the Patient Services Division. This individual provides support and acts as resource to the charge nurses on the night shift. She/he participates in the administrative function by contributing to the attainment and evaluation of nursing policies and procedures, goals and objectives and appropriate nursing standards. In the absence of the Director, Inpatient and Emergency Services, serves as administrative liaison by interpreting administrative policies to nursing staff, physicians, employee of other hospital departments and the community.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in achieving goals and maintaining quality patient care on assigned shift.
  • Works in concert with nursing managers to attain goals for their unit.
  • Seeks input in establishing goals for shift that pertain to department/unit goals.
  • Assists charge nurse in activities which support quality patient care.
  • Uses an established system to monitor continuity of care, assignments, accountability.
  • Participates in implementation of Standards of Care.
  • Provides periodic and annual summary of all activities in achieving goals for the department to the Director of Patient Services.
  • Collaborates with managers in conducting annual performance appraisals with staff on assigned shift.

Functions as administrative person in the absence of the hospital administrator.

  • Maintains current knowledge of hospital policies.
  • Concisely reports, to appropriate administrator, problems that affect his/her department.
  • Appropriately uses hospital/community resources.
  • Acts as liaison person between community and hospital.

Assesses, prioritizes and resolves problem situations pertinent to their shift.

  • Demonstrates problem solving ability:
  • Identifies the problem.
  • Validates the problem.
  • Considers multiple resources to solve the problem.
  • Develops the plan.
  • Implements the plan.
  • Evaluates the outcomes and documents.
  • Utilizes charge nurse and staff nurse in problem solving process.

Assesses correct practice and clinical environment and suggests appropriate changes for improvement on assigned shift.

  • Evaluates current nursing practice. Interprets and defines standards to staff. Facilitates implementation of change.
  • Monitors patient care activities and encourages collaboration/communication between departments.
  • Proposes solutions to appropriate persons/department.
  • Supports changes which improve patient care.
  • Participates in data collection activities related to evaluation of patient care.

Provides input into evaluating learning needs for staff and implements teaching program on assigned shift.

  • Identifies learning needs by the following:
  • Seeks input from nurse managers.
  • Assesses feedback from staff.
  • Evaluates quality of patient care.
  • Uses a variety of teaching and learning techniques. Evaluates effectiveness of teaching.
  • Assists in planning of developmental opportunities.
  • Proposes method of addressing learning needs.
  • Assists in development of short and long term goals for staff development.

Contributes to the development and achievement of goals of the Patient Services Department.

  • Promotes attainment of department goals.
  • Works within established time frame to meet department goals (annual reports, minutes of meetings).
  • Accurately communicates the goals of the Patient Services Department to other departments.
  • Personal and professional goals reflect department goal achievement.


Maintains responsibility for own continued learning and professional development.

  • Regularly recognizes and evaluates own strengths and weaknesses.
  • ( ) Develops plan to meet learning needs.
  • Attends available workshops and seminars to enhance clinical skills within the budget limits.
  • Demonstrates initiative in seeking out cost effective methods for augmenting professional knowledge and skill. Remains up-to-date within the field.
  • ( ) Seeks out or maintains advanced certification appropriate to clinical area.
  • Has attended mandatory in-service education: Code Blue, CPR, Infection Control.
  • Seeks direction in own practice, when appropriate.
  • Contributes to development of policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a record of all internal and external educational activities.
  • EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.

    STATE / FEDERAL MANDATED LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

    Current State of Connecticut Registered Nursing License

    ACLS

    Valid BLS at time of hire

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must demonstrate patience and kindness toward residents and families. Must possess good observation and communication skills.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must have the physical ability to perform all aspects of nursing care. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. Must be able to endure a prolonged period of extensive walking, standing, stooping, pushing, and pulling. Moderate periods of sitting, twisting, reaching, occasional crouching, crawling, kneeling and balancing. Vision, hearing, smell and tactile sensation corrected or accommodated to normal.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Regular contact with residents, body substances, and hazardous chemicals, 75 degree temperature, varied lighting, regular contact with soap and water, moderate noise level, use of various types of lifting devices.

    COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

    Ability to follow oral and written directions. Must be able to read and write.

    Resident Care Positions Only. Resident ages (18 years of age and up).
