JOB GOAL
To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Remains readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
- Works with students on an individual basis or in small groups in the solution of personal problems related to school, home, health, and emotional adjustment.
- Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
- Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students.
- Assists students in planning a course of study and evaluating career interests.
- Assists in identifying options for students with educational handicaps.
- Maintains an up-to-date library of catalogs, scholarship, and financial aid information related to schools, colleges, and institutions offering post-secondary training and education.
- Acquaints students and their parents of college entrance requirements, and helps make a realistic comparison between the student’s record and abilities and the specific entrance requirements of the college or colleges in which the student is interested.
- Assists students making application to post-secondary schools, including scholarship and financial aid applications.
- Maintains a supply of current application forms and information booklets for College Entrance Examination Board tests and for the American College Testing Program.
- Maintains open communications and positive relationship with college admission officers, especially those representing schools in which Tennessee High students traditionally demonstrate the most interest.
- Arranges conferences with students and college admission officers who visit the school.
- Organizes and conducts annual financial aid workshops and assists with area-wide college day.
- Prepares and supervises the processing of evaluations, recommendations, and other forms as required in connection with college scholarships and employment.
- Provides student information to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board’s policy on student records.
- Meets with representatives of vocational schools and the military services to discuss their programs and requirements and arrange meetings with students.
- Works cooperatively with community agencies (juvenile court, human services, public health, mental health, and vocational rehabilitation) to meet the needs of students requiring assistance.
- Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
- Confers with parents whenever necessary or as requested.
- Selects, administers, and interprets standardized tests to assist students in making appropriate career and/or college choices.
- Develops a school-wide program and schedule for group testing.
- Administers or supervises the administration of group tests of intelligence, achievement, aptitude, and interest.
- Prepares score reports of Tennessee High School students.
- Oversees the processing of transcripts for college, scholarship, and employment applications.
- Prepares follow-up of graduating class each year.
- Attends faculty meetings and other meetings called by principal, supervisor, or superintendent.
- Prepares various reports as designated by the principal.
- Performs such other duties as may reasonably be prescribed by the principal or his/her designee.
