Reports to: Building Administrator and Director of Pupil Personnel Services
QUALIFICATIONS:
● Rhode Island certification in elementary and/or secondary special education; Preference will also be given for possession of a Master's Degree and/or coursework in leadership
● Minimum of five (5) years successful teaching experience in Special Education.
● Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills
● Communicates high and clear expectations
● Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools finds appropriate and acceptable
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Coordinator of Special Education is responsible for the supervision of special education staff as assigned Pk-12 . The Coordinator serves as the LEA representative at Evaluation Team Meetings and IEP Team meetings. The Coordinator of Special Education works with the Building Administrator and Director of Pupil Personnel Services to ensure that the provision of special
education and related services to students with Individual Education Plans (IEP) is provided. The Coordinator of Special Education fosters collaboration among educators and recognizes the accomplishment of staff members. Depth of knowledge regarding special education law, processes and procedures, exceptional leadership and communication skills are paramount. This position will be assigned to the High School Level.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Adheres to the policies of the Bristol Warren Regional School Department
2. Promotes the attainment of the District's Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan.
3. Assists in the recruitment, selection and assignment of special education personnel
4. Demonstrates knowledge of special education regulations, processes, and service delivery options.
5. Collaborates with building leadership and/or department chairs regarding curriculum development, selection/evaluation of instructional materials and the design of common assessments.
6. Partners with respective building-based leadership teams to identify/organize professional development needs and activities for the school community in addition to participating in relevant professional development opportunities and building based leadership team meetings.
7. Integrates technology to more effectively facilitate meetings and assist educators in the delivery of specially designed instruction.
8. Independently and collectively collaborates with building administrators and/or department chairs to analyze student data as it pertains to student performance on statewide and local assessments.
9. Demonstrates an ability to diffuse difficult situations and seeks additional support, when necessary.
10. Works with the Building Administrators to prepare for course registration, scheduling and/or development of student and/or special education staff schedules
11. Plans for and contributes to effective transitions for new students and their
families.
12. Case Manage assigned students who attend out of district placements
13. Assists teams in designing and implementing Individual Educational Plans to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities along with developing the document to meet all regulatory requirements.
14. Works with the building administrators and the Director of Pupil Personnel Services to develop and implement efficient and effective service delivery models reflecting best practice in teaching and learning
15. Communicates effectively with parents/guardians and staff
16. Assists teams in analyzing data in order to target areas of concern or deficit so that appropriate team decisions will be made.
17. Serves as the Local Educational Agency representative for Evaluation Team and IEP meetings and demonstrates knowledge of special education eligibility criteria
18. Works with the Building Administrator and Director of Pupil Personnel Services to develop an annual budget for special education personnel and expenditures.
19. Assists in the preparation and revision of school documents (Program of Studies, Student Handbook, etc.) in conjunction with the Building Administrators
20. Collaborates with building administrators to prepare for the administration of state assessments and assists with coordinating accommodation needs for students with IEPs
21. Facilitates representation in school-wide curriculum development and other district wide initiatives as needed.
22. Assigns caseloads to special educators in conjunction with building administrator
23. Serves as a resource regarding special education issues to building level staff and administrators
24. Demonstrated ability and success in working collaboratively with large educational teams Consults and collaborates regularly and professionally with colleagues, students, and parents
25. Attendance is an essential function of all BWRSD positions.
26. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Building
