Since opening our doors in 1981, British Swim School has grown to be the premier water survival and learn-to-swim school in North America. Our mission is “to ensure that every person, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to become a safe and happy swimmer.” We have over 300 locations across the US and Canada, teaching over 30,000 students every week, and we are constantly growing our enthusiastic team to expand our impact!
About this Job Opportunity:
British Swim School of Pinellas operates 4 locations in Clearwater, Largo, and St Petersburg, As we look to build the next generation of water safe children and elite swimmers, we are looking to hire more Swim Instructors who are interested in teaching people of all ages how to swim. Before teaching any students, all of our instructors go through our best-in-class training program, which has been thoroughly refined over the course of our 45 year history, and is proven to be effective. This is a year-round position that will provide 10-20 hours per week of work at the pool, with opportunities for more work outside of the water if interested. Preference is for someone can work out of all 4 of our current locations in Clearwater, Largo and St Petersburg.
Your responsibilities would include:
- Learning and teaching swimming techniques to students with an emphasis on survival skills
- Enthusiastic engagement with children/swimmers while smiling, singing, and having fun
- Speaking to parents/customers about their children’s progress
- Working a schedule that will typically include weekday evenings and/or weekend morning classes (each shift typically 3-5 hours)
- Completion of online and in-person training on the British Swim School aquatics program as part of the onboarding process (paid)
- Note: All of our classes are taught at indoor pools -- you won't be required to roast in the sun or freeze in the cold.
So what are we looking for in a Swim Instructor?
- Experience meaningfully engaging with children, either personally or professionally (e.g. teaching, babysitting) is mandatory -- we need to know you love children
- An enthusiastic, outgoing, contagious personality and comfort with being "on stage" -- when you are teaching a class, you will have the eyes of the children and their parents on you, so you've got to be comfortable with being the center of attention
- A competitive swimming background (e.g. club, high school, and/or college team) and/or previous swim instructor experience is a strong positive but not mandatory
- Strong attention to physical detail -- need to be able to observe what students are doing right/wrong in order to give good feedback and help them progress
- Spanish speaking ability is also a strong positive but not required
- A current lifeguard certification is a strong positive but not required
Compensation: $18-21 per hour (depending on experience) upon completion of training; $15 per hour during training. From there, strong performers should expect their hours and pay to grow -- our philosophy is that we want high quality people to join us, grow with us, and take pride in being part of our team. And let's be real: a big piece of that is feeling well compensated -- accordingly, as we do well, we want you to do well financially too.
