The city of Britt is seeking a full-time Chief of Police. The position is a combination of administrative and patrol duties and is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the City of Britt Police Department. The Britt Police Department serves a community of 2,000 people and is made up with 3 Officers and a Chief of Police. The City of Britt provides a supportive environment for law enforcement, both within City government and within the broader community. Must be Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certified required or equivalent qualifications as mandated by state regulations. Residency will be required for the Chief of Police.

Salary ranges between $75,000-$95,000 based on certification status and experience. Britt offers a competitive benefit package including uniform allowance, paid time off, holiday pay, IPERS contribution, offer $750 annual stipend for Officers living in city limits, any on-call hours are paid by half pay of their hourly rate.

Overview
The Chief of Police serves as the highest-ranking officer in the police department, responsible for overseeing all operations, ensuring public safety, and maintaining law and order within the community. This leadership role requires a commitment to ethical policing practices, community engagement, and the development of effective law enforcement strategies. The Chief of Police will work closely with the City Council, Mayor and other local law enforcement agencies to foster relationships that enhance public trust and cooperation.

Duties

  • Lead and manage all aspects of the police department, including personnel management, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that promote effective law enforcement practices.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the City of Britt Police Department.
  • Engage with community members to build trust and address public safety concerns.
  • Provide leadership in conflict management situations, ensuring appropriate responses to crises.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and governmental organizations on regional safety initiatives.
  • Ensure all officers are trained in first aid, CPR, and other emergency response protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal laws regarding law enforcement operations and trainings.
  • Promote professional development within the department through training programs and certifications.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in law enforcement with a proven track record of leadership roles.
  • Have experience with issues facing rural communities, municipal policing, strong leadership, supervisory skills, operations and budgeting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a department effectively while fostering a culture of accountability and integrity.
  • Must possess valid law enforcement certification or equivalent qualifications as mandated by state regulations.
  • Must pass post-offer physical/ drug test and psychological evaluation.

The Chief of Police position is pivotal in shaping the future of community policing efforts while ensuring the safety and security of all citizens served by the department.
