GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Provides comprehensive interpretation and translation services for patients that speak Swahili.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
1. Provides accurate and effective interpretation of procedures and other interactions for non-English speaking patients, (adults and children) their families and Medical Center staff. (in person or on the telephone). Interpreter assists interpreting in emergency department, psychiatric unit, assessment areas, obstetric care, immunizations, well-child care, dental care, nutritional planning, vision testing, surgeries, family planning and all other areas.
2. May provide accurate and effective translation of written documents, correspondence and brochures, handouts or forms used by patients and families.
3. Provides information and consultation to Medical Center staff regarding cultural or ethnic issues.
4. Refers patient concerns/issues to appropriate Medical Center professional staff such as Chaplains, Care Management Service, Financial Counseling, Patient Representative etc.
5. Attends mandatory Medical Center training programs.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. High School diploma or GED.
2. Two years' experience as interpreter and translator.
3. Familiarity with culture involved.
4. Bi-lingual in specified language(s)-must meet BMC competency requirements.
5. Some flexibility in daytime hours and availability for some unscheduled hours interpreting.
6. Must pass a BMC administered competency or a language proficiency test established by BMC.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. B.A. degree in required language or related field.
2. Experience as interpreter or translator in medical setting.
3. Experience teaching ESL classes or comparable teaching experiences.
4. Ability to translate language into written form.
5. Classes/training in medical interpretation.
