Pediatrics Specialist, Mobile Crisis Response Team

4P-12A GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Mobile Crisis Pediatric Specialist reports to the Crisis Services department manager. This person will complete triage screenings, assist with de-escalation of crisis, complete safety planning, and support clients by providing community referrals as indicated. This position will work in collaboration with Des Moines Police Department (DMPD) dispatch and other department area staff to provide Behavioral Health support.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Receive transferred mental or behavioral health component calls from 911 dispatch. Begin initial triage screenings and psychosocial assessments for clients. Document assessments within client record in a timely manner. Perform assessment/data collection in an ongoing and systematic manner, focusing on environmental, self-care, and education. Identify potential barriers, disposition options and appropriate community resources in maintaining positive health. Provide a response and interim plan to clients with an identified need. Formulate an individualized, and age-appropriate safety plan. Establish contact with appropriate individuals from client’s support system or identified professionals. Interact with clients to provide ongoing assessment, support, and motivational interviewing. Attend team meetings and actively participates in the development of multi-disciplinary treatment for each client, including formulation of appropriate and measurable goals. Assist in the development and participates in programming for clients. Obtain and/or provide transportation for clients. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all services provided in accordance with department standards and regulations. Develop and maintains awareness of broad spectrum of community resources and knowledge of how to access them as needed by clients. Provide referrals to Broadlawns Medical Center and community resources as appropriate. Provide back-up to other Community Crisis department positions as needed. Support and embrace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. All other duties as assigned.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Demonstrate flexibility to adapt to changes in workload, schedule, department function and procedures. Compliant with HIPAA/confidentiality standards at all times. Participate in creating a positive and harmonious work environment by demonstrating teamwork and cooperative, responsive behaviors. Work collaboratively with the client and other behavioral health staff to formulate goals for treatment. Demonstrate effective communication methods and service excellence in all activities and interactions. Document assessments on 100% of evaluations. Work with clients to remain independent in the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing or master’s degree, specialized in pediatrics. Knowledge of crisis therapy and intervention techniques. 2 years working with individuals with chronic mental illness or Emergency Department experience. 2 years working with children or adolescents. Valid Iowa Driver’s License and ability to transport clients. Ability to pass Des Moines Police Department (DMPD) background check and fingerprinting. May not be convicted of a felony crime. Ability to work cooperatively with the multi-disciplinary team and in a high stress environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to verbally de-escalate clients utilizing Broadlawns Medical Center trained programs. Ability to complete electronic charting and documentation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Psychiatric Nursing Certification. Doctorate degree, specialized in Pediatrics. Experience working with law enforcement. Meditech experience. Bi-lingual. Knowledge of community resource and referral options.
