Title
Lead Sonographer - Vascular Ultrasound
Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, oversees the day to day department operations related to personnel and the provision of care for patients in areas of responsibility. The Lead Sonographer acts as the role model, mentor and resource to staff to ensure that all standards are maintained and to encourage a team environment. The Lead Sonographer assists with managing variability as it relates to workload, acuity, staffing and patient flow. The Lead Sonographer assists with the hiring and orientation process, is available to validate staff members’ clinical skills, and is the clinical resource for area of specialty. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Must hold RDCS, RDMS, RVT or CCI registry from American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) (must be in good standing and valid in the state of Michigan).
BLS required.
Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action
Personal computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets
Basic understanding of technical and clinical research literature and ability to conduct literature reviews.
Communicating effectively, both written and verbally, and demonstrating effective interpersonal relationships.
Work which produces very high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g. CRT work between 70 and 90 percent of the time, and work involving extremely close tolerances and considerable hand/eye coordination for sustained periods of time. Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
Regularly works with patients where social sensitivity and the ability to communicate effectively are definitely required. Must be able to work and communicate with all managers, employees, physicians, and customers with which department does business. The Lead Sonographer must be able to work well within a small work group which includes: communicating effectively with team members, assertively handling conflict, diplomatically resolving issues, participating in problem-solving. Individuals in this position must treat everyone in a professional manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities in addition to the duties and responsibilities of the sonographer, the Lead Sonographer performs the following, though other duties may be assigned:
  • Provides necessary direction for the daily operations of the cardiovascular team.
  • Assigns work and is responsible for or delegates work schedule preparation.
  • Communicates approved policies and procedures to subordinates and ensures compliance.
  • Recommends changes to policies and procedures when necessary and may participate in the development and implementation of such changes as delegated by technical director.
  • Responsible for additional coverage as needed due to absent staff or increased work load.
  • Adjusts staff according to workload.
  • Reports problems related to staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, and transfers.
  • Assists department leadership and technical director with hiring, orientation, training, and developing of new hires. Assesses their performance.
  • Provides in-service training in new techniques and equipment. Ensures that staff members have the necessary clinical, employment, administrative, and hospital information to perform their routine duties.
  • Compiles and analyzes quality assurance/ quality control data according to departmental procedures as delegated by technical director. May delegate these activities to team members as needed.
BMH CVS Lead Sonographer:
  • Functions as technical director for Bronson Healthcare Group accreditation
  • Serves as physician liaison providing a bridge between sonographers and the medical staff.
  • Functions as the clinical expert for area of specialty and serves as a clinical system resource to all members of the health care team.
  • Maintain a safe work environment. Implements department/hospital policies for environmental safety, equipment maintenance standards and equipment operation standards.
  • Leads ongoing departmental QA process.
  • Oversees collection and correlation of data to ensure overall accuracy for accreditation.
  • Keeps current in professional knowledge of cardiac and vascular disease.
  • Supports staff in providing efficient diagnostic testing to facilitate progress toward discharge.
  • Responsible to review, evaluate, and implement evidence based best practices related to policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Serves as Technical Director while facilitating accreditation meetings.
  • Makes recommendations regarding capital equipment, supplies, i.e., as relates to practice changes.
  • Participates in the orientation and education process.
  • Assists in validating the clinical skills of cardiovascular sonographers.
  • Actively participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of quality/safety initiatives related to the practice of cardiovascular ultrasound including conduct/facilitate audits.
  • Recommends action in all personnel matters for assigned staff and leadership.
  • Coordinates educational and development activities for staff members.
OB/GYN Practices Lead Sonographer:
  • Working directly with the OB/GYN Practice managers, the OB/GYN Practices Lead Sonographer Acts as team leader, providing the supervision necessary for the daily operation of the system OB/GYN sonography teams.
  • Serves as physician liaison providing a bridge between sonographers and the medical staff.
  • Functions as the clinical expert for area of specialty and serves as a clinical resource to all members of the team.
  • Assists with gathering necessary documentation for AIUM accreditation. Oversees collection and correlation of data to ensure overall accuracy for accreditation. Helps maintain processes and requirements to support continued compliance with AIUM accreditation.
  • Compiles and analyzes quality assurance/ quality control data according to departmental procedures. May delegate these activities to subordinates as needed.
  • Works with IT and AS to ensure software is up to date and functioning properly. Troubleshoots any issues related to AS/EPIC integration
  • Communicates approved policies and procedures to subordinates and ensures compliance. Recommends changes to policies and procedures when necessary and may participate in the development and implementation of such changes.
  • Responsible to review, evaluate, and implement evidence based best practices related to policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Actively participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of quality/safety initiatives related to the practice of OB/GYN ultrasound including conduct/facilitate audits.
  • Maintains a safe work environment. Implements department/hospital policies for environmental safety, equipment maintenance standards and equipment operation standards.
  • Responsible for additional coverage as needed due to absent staff or increased work load. Adjusts staff according to work load.
  • Reports problems related to staffing, morale, work methods, procedures, and transfers, and recommends action in all personnel matters for assigned staff.
  • Works with Practice Manager on hiring, orientation, training, and developing new hires. Assists in validating the clinical skills of OB/GYN sonographers. Evaluates their performance and provides feedback to Practice Manager and employee.
  • Coordinates educational and development activities for staff members. Provides in-service training in new techniques and equipment.
In addition, the Lead Sonographer must exhibit the ability to do the following:

  • Recognizing the importance and impact of monitoring resource utilization
