What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Teacher position at Bronx Collaborative High School?
LEARNING SPECIALISTS- SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER-
We are especially interested in special education teachers who are familiar with the Response to Intervention (RTI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and can bring these into their choice of which of the Six Collaborative Team Teaching Strategies is best suited for a specific class session plan. We need special educators who are flexible and can work with teachers who are in the midst of designing original courses; we need special educators who go beyond concrete scaffolds (like graphic organizers and planning documents) and instead CONCEPTUALLY SCAFFOLD class content and enduring understandings by capturing the underpinning concepts in their most accessible forms and SPIRALING those throughout the course.

Our school is a member of the NY Performance Standards Consortium-- providing students a meaningful education grounded in Socratic dialogue, independent research, critical thinking, data analysis, and oral defense work. Bronx Collaborative specifically uses high levels of problem-based learning, technology, and social/emotional skills education to support students in establishing themselves as public intellectuals with the tools to meet their goals beyond high school. Our mission also seeks to support students as they challenge the status quo as champions of their belief system who are well-informed and compassionate in their efforts to create change.
Our faculty are: passionate, energetic, creative. Our faculty prize: personal growth; student-centered inquiry; diversity; social justice; authentic instruction; social and emotional learning; and code switching. Our faculty treat students as family members communicating high expectations and supporting students in identifying and developing their myriad talents to the fullest. Our teachers are critically reflective and own their choices and grow as people learning to better communication with compassion towards students, other faculty, and administration.
Some basic info about the school--
- We’re on the Clinton Educational Campus (100 W. Mosholu Parkway South) and we do have a parking lot for teachers who drive.
- Our students join us from all Bronx school districts and are drawn to the “Student Choice” program that lets them pick classes in liberal arts college style- Intro and then selecting their areas of interest
- We are a PROSE school where teachers and student government created a modified block schedule with two (2) 94 minute Class Sessions Per Week in all core subjects
- Each department/discipline collaboratively decides who is teaching which grade levels and courses based on teachers’ interests and original course presentations.
- We use Mastery-based grading focusing on students’ ability to perform disciplinary specific standards rather than letter/number grades
- Students are encouraged to take 3-6 college courses at Lehman college while they are still in high school
- Our instruction is focused around real-world phenomena and Problem Based Learning
- Technology is a major element across subjects and we are looking to expand this
- All teachers serve as an Advisor
- All teachers take on distributed leadership and coordination of an aspect of the school (club, tutoring, administration, etc.) to maximize our offerings to students.
- We seek to teach students to “read the world as text” and make intentional and conscious decisions that ring authentic to their belief system and their life plan, possessing the ability to code switch, and knowing the impacts of their choices and other people's prejudices in the real world.
