Job Description

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office seeks a well-qualified staff whose diverse backgrounds contribute to serve the 1.4 million residents of the Bronx County community and who will pursue a safer Bronx through fair justice.

The Bronx District Attorney is seeking an experienced attorney with excellent management and supervisory skills to serve as Bureau Chief of the Rikers Island Prosecution Bureau (RIPB), within the Investigations Division. The Chief will lead, oversee, and supervise a multi-faceted team consisting of Assistant District Attorneys, investigators, and professional staff members in the investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses committed on Rikers Island including violent crimes involving gangs, organized contraband rings, sexual assaults, felony assaults, attempted murders and wide-ranging conspiratorial conduct. The Bureau is focused on reducing violent crimes and combatting sexual offenses occurring on Rikers Island. The Bureau works closely with the New York City Department of Correction and other law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute these crimes. Moreover, the Bureau collaborates with other bureaus including the Special Investigations Bureau, the Violent Criminal Enterprise Bureau, the Public Integrity Bureau, and the Crime Strategies Bureau to identify commonalities and patterns of gang activity, contraband trafficking, and violence.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Oversee the overall supervision of the day-to-day operations of the Bureau at the main office and the satellite office located on Rikers Island – periodically working from the satellite.

Lead, supervise and direct all investigations and prosecutions conducted by the Bureau.

Direct and oversee grand jury presentations.

Develop and implement investigative and prosecution strategies to address violence and combat sex crimes.

Analyze law enforcement intelligence involving internal and external criminal activity impacting Rikers Island.

Develop and maintain strong working relationships with various state, local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Motivate, organize, and direct RIPB staff to perform their jobs competently and with integrity.

Communicate across multiple organizational levels, both internally and externally.

Conduct in-depth case reviews and conferences on a regular basis.

Understand and respond clearly and effectively, orally and written, to complex legal issues.

Work cooperatively with a large and diverse staff.

Participate in training for office personnel and outside agencies.

Maintain statistics regarding the investigations and cases worked on within RIPB.

Manage and supervise RIPB staff, which may include responding to crime scenes inside of detention facilities.

Available nights, weekends, and holidays.

Perform other duties as required to support the work of the Bureau and the Office at large.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Juris Doctorate degree required and significant criminal law experience.

10 years of experience, and prior supervisory experience required, 2 years of which were in a managerial role.

Active and Good Standing in the New York State Bar.

US Citizenship and New York State residency are required as of the first day of employment.

Strong knowledge of, and experience with, the New York State Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law including Article 245.

Significant experience developing and overseeing all aspects of long-term criminal investigations and prosecutions involving gangs, violent crimes, and sex crimes.

Significant trial experience including, but not limited to: trials involving violent felonies.

Significant grand jury experience.

Strong legal writing skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

Ability to exercise good judgment and strong ethics.

Strong business planning and forecasting skills.

Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Excellent presentation and organizational skills.

Ability to solve complex issues arising from investigations and case management from inception to conclusion both professionally and fairly.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge of NYS courts and the criminal justice system.
