Role Description

This is a part-time on-site role as an Evening-Program Massage Therapy Instructor located in Lincroft, NJ. The instructor will be responsible for teaching courses in Anatomy & Physiology, Kinesiology, Client Intake, Assessment, SOAP Charting, Swedish Massage, Neuromuscular Techniques, Connective Tissue Techniques, Ethics and Business Practices, Pathology, and Supervised Clinical Practice.

Class is in session Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 9pm. Instructors are expected to be on-campus from 4:30pm to 9:30pm to allow for opening and closing as well as making time for student support. Programs typically run for 10 months with a maximum enrollment of 10 students. Typically, each program has two instructors who each work 2 our of the 4 days per week. All instructors are expected to follow the curriculum as outlined and to follow draping and technique protocol as outlined within the program - this may require training with Jennifer Carlson to ensure consistency within the students' learning experience.


Responsibilities

  • follow curriculum as outlined in the master schedule
  • familiarize self with lesson plans before leading lectures
  • meet with Jennifer Carlson as needed to ensure understanding of lesson plan content
  • report to team about student progress via email after each instructional day
  • remind students to work through class prep each day
  • track attendance each day
  • grade tests/quizzes/exams directly after they are completed, input grades into computer system, and review with students


Qualifications

  • Medical Massage and Therapeutic Massage skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer literacy
  • License in Massage Therapy with 3 years experience
  • Have successfully completed the MBLEx, NCBTMB exam, and/or the New York Massage Therapy Licensing Exam
  • A team player
  • Able to follow curriculum and lesson plans
  • Previous experience in a similar role is a plus

Program Highlights


We provide students with an excellent academic foundation and strong applied skills. Students will develop the knowledge and ability to effectively conduct a client assessment, create ethical treatment plans, deliver safe and effective massage therapy treatments, and evaluate the outcome of treatments.

 

Our 684-hour program is an extremely challenging and rewarding educational experience that provides the pathway to become a New Jersey Licensed Massage Therapist.

Upon successful completion of all program courses and clinic experience within the curriculum, students of Brookdale Community College's Massage Therapy Program will be eligible to graduate and challenge the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx). This comprehensive exam requires a 70% pass rate to become a Licensed Massage Therapist in 44 states. The MBLEx and created by the Federation of Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) who are affiliated with the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards (FARB) and Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR)

 

Licensed Massage Therapists in New Jersey are professionals governed by the New Jersey Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy for the remainder of their careers in massage therapy with expectations to stay current by obtaining and reporting 20 hours of Continued Education and refreshed CPR/AED training each licensing renewal period.

Brookdale has offered the Massage Therapy program at the Lincroft campus since 2016. The program has acquired a great reputation, with a consistently high (over 90%) overall graduate employment rate. We have dedicated, experienced faculty who are leaders in the profession.

Students with previous health-care training will find interest in the explanation of how massage techniques have an effect on every system within the body, which will provide a fresh perspective. Students who do not have previous healthcare training will be provided with thorough explanations of their sciences and the support necessary to truly understand the systems and their responses. To provide comprehensive education, evidence-based, and client-centered experiences that promote the health and wellness of students, individuals, and communities.

 

Is This Program for You?


Students will receive and give Swedish and Therapeutic Massage (several times a week) throughout the program, by and to other students in the practical classes. Students will develop and demonstrate maturity with respect to their own touch history and that of their fellow students. Students will develop a deep respect for personal boundaries and exceptional communication skills. Students must have a strong desire to improve the lives of the clients through Therapeutic Massage and have the motivation to further their career with Continuing Education after course completion, passing the MBLEx, and applying for licensure.

Massage Therapy professors strongly recommend that entering students receive at least 3 professional massages from a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) prior to entry to this program. In addition, students contemplating admission should have a health-related education science background and interest. Students must be prepared to study their lecture content and practice their massage techniques daily outside of classes during the length of the program. Students would benefit by having basic computer skills including e-mail, word processing, file management and internet web browsing.

 

 

Career Opportunities


Licensed Massage Therapists may work in various settings and specialties, such as: Chiropractic and Physiotherapy clinics, Athletic and Sport facilities, Spas, Cruise Ships, Hotels, Corporate Offices, private practice (either in home office or with other LMT's), and Hospice and Palliative Care centers.

 

Minimum Requirements

 

High school diploma

18 years of age or older

Has attended a Massage Therapy information session or interview into the program

 

Recommended Prerequisites (but not required for admission)

 

A focus on science course throughout high school

Kinesiology and/or health sciences courses

Any university of college level courses

  • Collect and assess clients' information to determine their state of health and the treatment goals.
  • Develop a plan of care according to the client's condition and the treatment goals.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care.
  • Maintain documentation securely, accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Develop and implement ongoing effective strategies for personal and professional development to ensure quality care.

Total: $9,915 with a breakdown provided below.


Tuition: $8,999

*Includes student liability insurance and a massage kit for practical classes.


Books: $376 approximately, for brand new textbooks.

*May be lower if students purchase used copies.


Portable Massage Table: $60 to $450 approximately

*Prices vary depending on used or new, construction and quality.


MBLEx and Licensing Fees: $340

*Subject to increase by the FSMTB and NJDOC.
