Overview :

The position of Student Success Coach / Advisor provides students from various backgrounds, particularly students from high-risk populations with the tools and resources to be successful in college. The position maintains a meaningful relationship of sustained, shared responsibility with the student and active engagement in programs directed toward retention and student success as well as developing and implementing specific retention programing for under-represented groups of students. The position is responsible for building relationships with students to assist them in navigating the College's enrollment processes and transitioning successfully to the College. Through integrated work with faculty and the student, the Success Coach / Advisor delivers universal, seamless, personalized support. Using technology, the position monitors student progress at strategic, mandatory touch points with proactive early alerts and interventions.

Responsibilities : Success Coach :

  • Manage and monitor a caseload of students, serving as the primary point of contact providing consistent, accurate and timely information about the College's policies and programs.
  • Leverage technology and high-engagement strategies, including but not limited to Degree Audit, the Student Planning tool and the CRM to connect with students and faculty at mandatory touch points throughout the year. Instruct students in the use of technology including Degree Audit function and Student Planning tools to develop and monitor their academic plan and status toward degree completion.
  • Support students in developing an educational plan and strategies to improve student success and facilitate completion to degree utilizing Guided Pathway models.
  • Mentor students in skills needed to be successful in college; prepare and present workshops on a variety of student success related topics; develop and maintain positive working relationships with faculty and staff to enhance communication, interventions and student success.
  • Advise students, in the area of, but not limited to, degree selections, transfer, probation and suspension, financial aid appeals, career resources and graduation.
  • Assist the department with Early Alerts and other retention activities and initiatives utilizing the latest technology in sending these alerts at critical points in the semester.
  • Required participation in student programs and activities related to Enrollment, Orientation and other student success or retention related activities and collaborate with Student Affairs Division to facilitate relevant retention and success initiatives and other student activities.

Advising :

  • Work with faculty and staff to promote utilization of the CRM system concerning students in caseload. Assist faculty and staff with utilization of the CRM system when necessary. Utilize the CRM system to run weekly reports to identify behaviors suggesting that a student may be at risk for failure and monitor the academic progress of these students.
  • Maintain an Institute-based caseload of students and engage in case management practices, including development of student success plans, individual case conferences, and use of the CRM to document services provided and specific case details. Outreach to students in caseload listed in the CRM report and maintain contact to address their needs and facilitate success.
  • Provide individualized interventions addressing academic and life issues, by identifying and responding to adjustment problems, learning difficulties, basic needs, and other barriers to student success. Refer to other internal and external resources as needed.
  • Assist with development, monitoring, adjusting, and implementation of educational plans as need arises.
  • Promote, monitor, and track student participation in programs, services, and activities and address barriers to student success.
  • Establish functional working relationships with key college personnel, offices, departments, and community agencies. Develop effective relationships with faculty and provide consultation and conferencing regarding issues and problems often experienced by first year students.
  • Guide students in career exploration; utilize program -sponsored career and education planning systems to help students choose appropriate programs of study, identify Meta-major and related Guided Pathway tracks.
  • Advise students on the transfer process and assist them in effectively linking their Brookdale educational plan to the educational requirements of prospective transfer institutions.
  • Assist with assessment practices including development, implementation and reporting features. Evaluate and analyze student service effectiveness and assist with developing written reports for internal and external audiences that may include recommendations.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Qualifications : Education :

  • Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Experience :

  • Three years of experience working directly with students fostering student learning, support and success as well as a clear understanding of academic advising and first year experience at the community college level.
  • Experience in academic advising and / or coaching, including work with at-risk students, transfer students, undecided students, low-income and first-generation students, historically underrepresented groups, and / or student-athletes is preferred.
  • Knowledge / Skills / Abilities :

  • Demonstrated ability to work with students in high-risk population.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing a community college student and the ability to instruct and motivate students at the college level.
  • Ability to develop positive mentoring relationships with a diverse student population.
  • Must be computer literate with ability to utilize Microsoft Office at an intermediate level and the ability to learn and utilize specific higher education programs and systems. Individual should have superior analytical, written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills as well as leadership and management skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations is required.
  • Multi-lingual preferred.
  • Preferred Qualifications & Special Considerations :

  • Knowledge of Monmouth County and its communities.
  • Individual must be able to work a flexible schedule. The nature of the position will require workdays and hours outside of the normal college schedule to reflect the needs of our students. Occasional travel required.
