Whisconier Middle School is seeking a School Security Monitor
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Security Specialist is responsible for supporting the maintenance of a safe environment for students and staff. This is accomplished by following the Daily Operating Procedures and employing the skills outlined herein:
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Reports to the School Principal and receives building specific direction from the school administrators. Evaluation in accordance with the provisions of the Board of Education’s policy governing the performance evaluation of non-certified staff.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES*
*inclusive of but not limited to the following:
- Execute the Daily Operating Routine, which includes building envelope tour, interior room check, life safety systems review, and general hazards surveillance.
- Monitor the movement of students, staff, and visitors in the buildings during the school day.
- Carry provided radio at all times
- Report any unusual conditions on school grounds or with security/safety related equipment or responds accordingly, as appropriate.
- Maintain surveillance on persons entering and leaving school grounds. Patrol buildings and grounds to prevent vandalism and unauthorized entry. Greet and sign in visitors, volunteers, and vendors. Implements routines and random checkpoints throughout the day.
- Confront unauthorized persons for verifying the purpose of visit.
- Intervene in situations involving student safety and assist the administration as requested.
- Assist with the direction of the flow of traffic as assigned from 25 minutes before the opening of school to 15 minutes after dismissal, and direct the flow of traffic as assigned for school activities, as scheduled.
- Assist in the movement of students in emergencies.
- Assist with the management and oversight of designated parking areas. * Patrol and observe designated play areas to ensure student safety as determined by school administration.
- Assist law enforcement and school administrators during announced and unannounced lockdown and other emergency preparedness drills as mandated by the state of CT.
- Advise district and building administrators regarding recommended adjustments to the security and emergency response plan.
- Assist law enforcement officials in the event of an emergency or other police activity on campus, as requested.
- Collaborate with building administration and law enforcement to facilitate a safe, secure and orderly school environment.
- Monitor security cameras as directed by the administration.
- Participate in regularly scheduled security meetings of the school to provide feedback and to contribute to resolution of any current issues of concern.
- Address issues of safety with other staff members, as appropriate.
- Provide feedback to administration regarding the compliance of staff with respect to safety protocols and practices.
- Report to administration, any broken or malfunctioning locks, cameras and/or other equipment utilized for maintaining a safe school.
- Conduct himself/herself in a courteous, professional manner with parents, staff and visitors.
- Maintain a positive, professional relationship with students to develop an atmosphere of trust and cooperation.
- May assist in other duties as assigned by the administration when students are not on campus if not attending an orientation or training session.
- Remain on campus during the lunch period and respond to any emergency during such time.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality of security issues related to the district at all times. Wear a uniform as designated.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
- High School Diploma
- Ability to work with students, educators and parents.
- PMT trained or willing to be trained.
- Ability to work outdoors for periods throughout the day.
- Demonstrates aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Prior experience working with youth is preferred.
- Prior security training preferred.
- Prior law enforcement experience, emergency first response experience and/or military experience involving security is a plus.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
TERMS
- Work days per annual student school days, 7.5 hours per day (including ½ hour unpaid lunch), 5 days per week
- Up to two additional works days may be required as determined by the school administrator and/or superintendent or designee
- Salary ($25.46 per hour) and Medical/Dental and Vision benefits in accordance with the Board of Education policy for unaffiliated employees.
