This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago (“BZC”) by performing quality repairs and maintenance for BZC vehicles to assure these assets are safe and properly maintained, thus contributing to BZC’s overall financial sustainability and to provide quality service to internal clients and contributing to an exceptional experience for guests.
This is a temporary/seasonal union position with a starting pay rate of $15.00 per hour and requires a union initiation fee upon hire and monthly union dues/fees. Brookfield Zoo is open 363 days a year including weekends and holidays. The timeframe for this position is typically April - December.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
1. * Perform designated responsibilities as assigned, following BZC’s vehicle preventive maintenance program in a timely and efficient manner, such as performing regularly scheduled oil changes and safety/performance inspections.
2. * Assist full-time Craftsworkers in the performance of in-house repairs in a timely manner and within budgetary guidelines in the areas of engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle repair, manual drive train and axle repair, suspension and steering repair, brake replacement and repair, electrical and electronic system repair, heating and air conditioning repair, and engine performance.
3. * Engage in pick-up and drop-off of BZC vehicles or their related component parts for off-site repair or replacement as requested.
4. * Maintain mechanics garage in an organized operating condition through proper disposal of waste oil and used parts, placement of tools into proper storage areas, and other duties as assigned by the Lead Craftsworker-Mechanic.
5. * Maintain proper and accurate inventory levels of required operating supplies (such as lubricants and commonly used automotive parts) to established par levels.
6. As needed, assist full-time Craftsworkers in carrying out daily operational checks associated with the operation of the Carousel attraction. This includes visual inspections of all operating components for proper and safe mechanical operation, engaging attraction in required daily test cycles, ensuring proper fluid levels are maintained, verifying all mechanical elements are receiving the proper rates of lubrication as required, and re-lamping of attraction as needed.
7. Other related duties as assigned.

Because the position provides (back-up) support for the Carousel, incumbent is subject to random drug testing upon hire under the Illinois Amusement Ride and Attractions Safety Act. Position requires non-standard hours, including holidays, late hours, and weekends.

Tuition Reimbursement

- Trade school or formal post-high school mechanics training or minimum three years directly relevant mechanic experience required.
- Technical knowledge and mechanical skills required for the maintenance, repair, and service of gasoline and diesel equipment.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- English fluency at a professional working proficiency required.
- Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
- A valid driver’s license is required at time of hire. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license or obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver’s license is required for out-of-state residents.
- One or more of the following licensures may be required: Valid "C" or "B" (CDL) Driver's License.
- Valid medical authorization card required for positions with commercial motor vehicle driving responsibilities.
- High school diploma or educational equivalent (e.g., GED.) preferred
- National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification a plus.
- Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
