POSTED ON 4/20/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/4/2025

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEWThe Accelerator Science & Technology (AS&T) Department develops transformative technology advances that will form the basis of next-generation particle sources and accelerators; supports user-driven research into the science and technology of accelerator and laser physics; and helps enable the deployment of new technologies for basic science, industry, medicine, and security applications. The AS&T Department is comprised of the Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD) and Superconducting Magnet Division (SMD). It is part of Brookhaven’s Discovery Technologies Directorate, which aims to deliver cross-cutting technologies that support a range of scientific and national needs.Within the AS&T Department, the mission of SMD is to develop and construct state-of-the-art superconducting magnets for application in accelerators and detectors and to maintain and further develop the expertise and facilities in specialized high technology areas essential for this work. The Division has made important contributions to the construction of many accelerator facilities around the world from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and the SuperKEKB facility at KEK. It has also built many custom experimental magnets such as alpha-g magnet for CERN. The division is currently testing magnets for the High Luminosity LHC upgrade and is developing interaction region magnets for Brookhaven’s next major collider, the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).SMD has a long history of pioneering advances in magnet design and construction. This spans development of two beams in a single magnet as utilized in the LHC rings, the common coil design for high field magnets, and the direct wind technique for constructing the superconducting corrector magnets used in the complex interaction region magnets for colliders. The Division is presently developing the specialized interaction region magnets needed for the EIC.POSITION DESCRIPTIONBrookhaven National Laboratory seeks a distinguished superconducting magnet expert with an international reputation in the area of superconducting magnet technology to lead the Superconducting Magnet Division. The Director of SMD will be part of the AS&T Department leadership team and will play an integral role in supporting strategic initiatives in the Discovery Technologies Directorate and BNL more broadly. The SMD Director will have primary responsibility for maintaining a robust superconducting magnet R&D program and for the support of major project efforts such as the Accelerator Upgrade Project for HL-LHC and the EIC. The SMD Director will also be responsible to continue the development of a team of talented and innovative magnet experts that is able to deliver new technology advances and support the development of major research capabilities to support the DOE Office of Science and national needs.Essential Duties and Responsibilities : Provide and execute a vision for SMD that is aligned with the Laboratory’s strategic priorities.Support the AS&T Department Chair in development of strategic plans for the department and division.Attract, retain, and foster the development of a team of talented and innovative magnet experts, whose expertise can support the superconducting magnet research, development, production, and testing efforts within the division.Oversee magnet development and testing activities the various magnet projects and R&D efforts that are active within the division.Develop and implement plans for the division that grow capabilities essential to the superconducting magnet research community, advance the use of superconducting magnets in accelerator applications and allied technologies, and enable deployment of advanced research capabilities.Implement workforce training engagements that help deliver science and technology expertise vital to the nation’s future needs.Maintain BNL’s strong international reputation for accelerator capabilities and technology to enable ground-breaking fundamental science supporting the DOE Office of Science mission.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : A PhD in physics or a related field. At least 10 years of experience with research in superconducting magnet technology. At least 6 years of management and leadership experience with complex and multidisciplinary research programs.A record of significant scientific and / or technical contributions in superconducting magnet technology.Experience working in a DOE facility, NSF facility, or major industrial development environment.Experience communicating with key stakeholders, clients, program sponsors, and internal staff.Demonstrated experience in successfully developing, implementing, and executing scientific strategy with engagement from critical stakeholders.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build collegial relationships and collaborate with all levels of staff within the Laboratory including Senior Leadership.Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities : Demonstrated expertise through having an internationally recognized research program that overlaps some of the SMD core technologies and research directions.Additional Information : Moderate domestic and foreign travel.Pursuit of a DOE “Q” security clearance may be desirable.#J-18808-Ljbffr
