Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Nuclear Safety Division program is undergoing expansion to address the nation’s growing demand for critical medical radioisotopes, which the Department of Energy (DOE) has designated as a Mission Essential Function for our Laboratory. The Nuclear Safety Division is supported by the Facilities & Operations (F&O) Directorate, which provides engineering design and maintenance services for a Hazard Category 3 nonreactor nuclear facility.

Position Description

The candidate will serve as the Nuclear Facility Engineer at the Radionuclide Research and Production Laboratory (RRPL) and will report to the F&O Chief Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for serving as a responsible Engineer for various building systems (i.e., mechanical, electrical, structural) within this Hazard Category 3 nuclear facility and provide nuclear maintenance management support for the systems.

As part of our team, you will work in a research and production environment with nuclear safety professionals, engineers, and scientific staff, collaborating in cross-disciplinary teams to ensure that all facility operations remain within the DOE-approved safety basis while maximizing the availability of the facility for scientific activities. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with staff from a diverse set of backgrounds while facilitating the development and production of isotopes that are critical to our Nation’s prosperity and security, including life-changing radioisotopes that have shown amazing promise as therapeutics against aggressive cancers.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide nuclear maintenance management support to facility systems.
  • Serve as a liaison between the nuclear facility and F&O for the coordination and scheduling of maintenance of systems.
  • Review and provide input to the development of, and concur on operating, maintenance, and test procedures and job plans for systems.
  • Be cognizant of system-specific maintenance and operations history.
  • Assist in the operations review of key system parameters and evaluate system performance, including identifying trends from operational data and maintenance logs.
  • Aid in Operability Determinations (OD) when systems are inoperable or are functioning in a degraded or out-of-specification condition.
  • Initiate actions to correct problems with facility systems.
  • Develop and manage System Design Descriptions (SDDs), requirements traceability reports, verification and validation (V&V) plans, qualification plans, and test and acceptance documents.
  • Develop, manage, and execute procedures for facility safety system In-Service Inspections (ISI) and/or Surveillance Requirements (SR).
  • Provide input to the review of design drawings for nuclear safety structures, systems, and components.
  • Provide support for the review and approval of changes to systems and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure system changes are consistent with safety basis and best practices.
  • Ensure that configuration of assigned systems is being managed effectively.
  • Support facility safety basis implementation and hazard analysis processes.
  • Interface with Department of Energy, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with federal regulation Planning and executing maintenance activities on nuclear plant equipment, including inspections, repairs, and upgrades to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Developing and enforcing strict safety protocols, and radiation protection procedures to minimize risks associated with nuclear facility systems operations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, physical sciences, nuclear engineering technology, or a related field from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of technical work experience, of which at least one year of nuclear experience at a DOE Hazard Category nuclear facility, naval reactor plant, or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) equivalent.
  • Demonstrated expertise of systems and general engineering principles with an aptitude in reading and understanding engineering documents, drawings, and specifications.
  • Thorough understanding of the nature of systems engineering, requirements traceability, verification and validation (V&V), risk analysis, and technical documentation.
  • Must possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be organized, diligent, and accustomed to a nuclear safety culture.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of technical work experience, of which at least three (3) years of nuclear experience at a DOE Hazard Category nuclear facility, naval reactor plant, or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) equivalent.
  • Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable.
  • Systems Engineering Professional Certification from INCOSE at the Associate or Certified Level or equivalent.
  • Systems Engineering, or related, Certificates from other academic institutions or professional institutions.
  • Experience with configuration management, system design documentation, and engineering change processes.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry and regulatory consensus codes and standards, including but not limited to International Building Code, National Fire Protection Association Life Safety (NFPA 101), and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Nuclear Quality Assurance (ASME NQA-1).
  • Knowledge of DOE Orders, Directives, and Standards associated with nuclear facilities (e.g. DOE O 420.1C, DOE O 414.1D, etc.).
  • Familiarity with nuclear maintenance under a program that is compliant with DOE O 433.1B.
  • Familiarity with configuration management under a program that is compliant with DOE-STD-1073.
  • Familiarity with 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B and the Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) process.
  • Experience with programs and processes that are compliant with ASME NQA-1 consensus standards.
  • Ability to perform within a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks, and adapt to evolving needs.

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $92300 - $149317 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
