TITLE: SPECIAL OLYMPICS COACH
QUALIFICATIONS:
- To hold or be able to accomplish appropriate coaching certification in accordance with Special Olympics South Dakota guidelines.
- To pass all appropriate background checks required by the district and Special Olympics South Dakota.
- Have background/experience in sports and/or coaching
REPORTS TO: Director of Activities/Director of Special Services
BASIC FUNCTION:
To be able to design and implement athletic instruction for student athletes with special needs
To be able to coach and direct volunteer coaches in the sporting events selected by the district
To work with parent and booster organizations to run an effective year-long sporting program for student athletes with special needs
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Seek and obtain appropriate levels of coaching certification according to the State Special Olympics guidelines.
- Promote and seek the registration of all interested school-age athletes.
- Communicate practices and other events (regional, state) schedules to parents/guardians.
- Communicate expectations for student athletes to athletes and their parents/guardians on a regular basis.
- Be responsible for the collection and submission of required paperwork for student athletes for participation in State Special Olympic events (physicals, coach and athlete lists, etc)
- Plan for and direct all practice events with student athletes.
- Assist in the coordination of volunteer coaches.
- Promote the assistance of parents and guardians with practices, regional and state events.
- Plan and submit transportation requests to the BSD transportation office for all planned travel events for SO regional and State Tournaments.
- Work collaboratively with other coaches to ensure opportunities for all athletes in the BSO program (school-age and adults) are maximized for participation in each season of sporting events.
- Annually, select the three sporting events to be supported by the district in coordination with the Special Olympics Brookings Governing Committee as well as the Brookings School District administration.
- Ensure any fundraising activities undertaken by the coaching staff is coordinated through appropriate approval procedures for the school district.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and work year to be established in accordance with the Board of Education policy.
EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
This position is responsible to the building principal and the performance of this position will be evaluated by the Director of Activities and the Director of Special Services.
