Job Description:
The Brookline Public Schools are seeking an energetic and collaborative teacher, who has expertise in teaching Chemistry at a conceptual and high level as a full time, long-term substitute. The candidate hired will fill an opening anticipated to start mid-April, 2025, through the remainder of the school year in June.
The teacher will be responsible for teaching Chemistry I (co-teaching) and Chemistry 1 Honor to 10th grade students. Chemistry I Honor is a rigorous, mathematically oriented treatment of the physical world of matter, emphasizing its interactions with energy and the logical evolution of theories concerning both matter and energy. The course prepares students for advanced coursework in Chemistry and Biology. The course stresses the systematic relationship of the major topics of chemistry. The laboratory work stresses observation, proper and safe techniques, logical data interpretation, and systematic acquisition of laboratory skills. Chemistry I is a more conceptual approach to chemistry, incorporating modeling and inquiry activities, laboratory exercises and more scaffolded supports to students. Co-taught sections will be supported by a special educator.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Co-teaching two Chemistry 1 classes.
- Teaching two Chemistry I Honor classes.
- Teaching one Tutorial class with other teachers to mentor students with all of their coursework.
Requirements Qualifications:
- Well-developed understanding of Chemistry pedagogy
- Thorough knowledge of how diverse learners acquire and develop an understanding of science
- Ability to reflect on personal learning through the analysis of one’s teaching practice, student learning data, and the teaching practices of others
- Ability to be open to constructive critique of supervisors, administrators and colleagues
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of materials and modes of instruction
- Demonstrated effective techniques for classroom management.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, parents, colleagues and community members.
- Bachelor’s Degree
Preferred Qualifications:
- Mass. DESE license in Chemistry 9-12
- SEI Endorsement
- Master’s Degree (or finishing a Master's Degree)
- Experience teaching chemistry
