NDA Family Development Coach

Position: NDA Family Development Coach

Reports to: Beacon Program Director

Work Location: Dr. Susan S. McKinney Secondary School of the Arts, 101 Park Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Hours: Full Time 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday 1-9pm,

This position is fully in-person and does not offer any remote work.

Salary Range: $50,000 - $50,000

Brooklyn Community Services is one of Brooklyn’s first and largest non-sectarian social services agencies. BCS, which presently serves more than 20,000 individuals annually, is committed to a broad and diverse range of services including education and child care; services to strengthen families; and services to foster self sufficiency for adults.

The High School Education Support program aims to engage youth in grades 9-12 in a program that will, through project-based learning and internships, support and encourage them to attain the academic skills and standing that will enable them to stay in school, attain high school diplomas, and plan their career paths.

Target population:

Students in grades 9-12 with GPA of 75 (C) or lower, failing grades in one or more subjects, or chronic school absenteeism

Family incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty level

80% must reside or attend school in the proposed NDA.

Responsibilities:

  • The Development Coach supports a case load of approximately 32 high school students enrolled in the NDA Education Support Program

  • Create, facilitate and implement after-school academic and tutoring workshops for these high school students enrolled in NDA Education Support Program (add-on programming to larger Beacon after-school program)

  • Work in partnership with larger Beacon program to develop and implement post-secondary after-school workshops and seminars, including work-readiness support, soft skills building, college readiness, career pathways and leadership development

  • Organize and lead college tours

  • Support these high school youth with internship opportunities, including job internship placements and/or project-based learning opportunities

  • Provide academic planning and case management services for a caseload of approximately 32 high school students.

  • Responsible for working with the participant on achieving the goals indicated in the Family Development Plan (FDP)

  • Maintain contact with the cohort as a whole and meet with each assigned participant at least once every four weeks and more frequently if needed during the period of service, documenting each meeting with written progress notes that present an assessment of the needs and strengths of the participant, an objective account of the interaction, and a plan for meeting the specific goals in the FDP.

  • Provide academic counseling, identify participant issues, and facilitate access to relevant supports.

  • Meetings with each participant at least once every four weeks

  • Assist youth in attending school regularly by identifying obstacles, connecting students with resources and conducting attendance outreach including home visits.

  • Maintain regular contact with school personnel and work with agency-identified partners and other appropriate organizations and refer participants as needed.

  • Assist youth with the development of actionable post-secondary plans.

  • Provide immediate crisis intervention support as needed, including mediation support.

  • Provide family outreach and conduct parent/guardian meetings as appropriate.

  • Provide counseling and support services to families with the intent of improving communication between family members and students to ensure they have support they need to function at optimal levels.

  • Document all work and keep case records on all students on caseload as required.

  • Attend DOE Parent-Teacher conferences, School Leadership meetings, Parent Teacher Association meetings and out of town College Trips in accordance with DOE school calendar.

  • Provide assistance with the college application process.

  • May include out-of-school hours, including weekends, as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned by Program Director

Qualifications required:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Family Development Credential preferred; if not held, it will need to be obtained within 12 months

  • Experienced in utilizing appropriate resources and working with City systems such as public assistance, child welfare, education, and housing

  • Experience and demonstrated case management support in working with youth and families required, Prior experience in a school setting preferred; College preparatory experience required

  • Excellent organizational, written, and communication skills

  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective in which the strengths and assets of individuals, families, and communities are valued

  • Willingness to be creative and work as an integral part of a team

  • Fingerprinting and criminal background check required.
