Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Academy Charter School (BELA) is a STEAM focused all-girls high school located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, focused on SISTERHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, STRENGTH and SERVICE. The Role

BELA believes that our greatest instructional strategy is our teachers. Effective teachers, who are continually learning and supporting our young women to meet high expectations, are key to each student’s success. BELA’s ELA/Ethnic Studies Teacher seeks inspiration and challenge from their work; seeks to understand themselves and their colleagues to better achieve a shared goal; shows the urgency and gratitude that accompanies doing something you love; embraces the possibility of failure and believes failures are necessary for learning.
 

Teachers and Staff members at BELA will:

  • Create inspiring, challenging, and effective teaching learning experiences for all of our students
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, students and school leadership to build the school from the ground up
  • Share in the leadership of the school by taking on essential roles in addition to teaching
  • Be committed to serving all students, including Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners, in the context of the regular education classroom using a variety of inclusion models
  • Become part of a strong and supportive professional learning community committed to restorative practices
  • Enjoy and thrive in the lively and diverse world of urban adolescent young women while striving to create a model of public education that serves them well.
  • Design, facilitate and participate in experiences and conversations that relate to race, gender, class, and sexual identity in ways that empower students and foster community

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach five ELA/Ethnic Studies classes; facilitate one enrichment class
  • Create and teach challenging and engaging lessons linked to Common Core State Standards and International Baccalaureate Standards
  • Use a variety of assessment techniques weekly, monthly, and each trimester to measure growth toward achievement goals
  • Provide individual and small group instruction until all students meet mastery
  • Serve as a mentor teacher to a group of 8-10 young women and teach one section of Leadership Academy daily
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to plan curriculum and build school culture across the school
  • Attend school and community events

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or relevant academic field is required; Master’s degree preferred
  • NYS licenses/certification preferred
  • Minimum two years of urban teaching preferred.
  • Strong belief in the mission and core values of BELA
  • Proficiency with Google drive and Google Classroom preferred
