Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade. Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses. BHMS also offers an after-school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a beautiful facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Job Description: Middle School Spanish Teacher and Advisor 

 

Start Date:            August 2025

Reports to: Assistant Head of School

Brief Description: The Middle School Spanish Teacher and Advisor is a full-time, 10-month position at the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. The program blends the best practices of Montessori and independent school pedagogy. The Middle School Spanish Teacher and Advisor will work in conjunction with the Assistant Head of School, the other Middle School teachers, the School Psychologist, and the Middle School Learning Specialist to educate and lead a groups of 6th, 7th and 8th graders in accordance with the principles of Montessori educational philosophy and practices and the mission, statement of diversity, curriculum, and policies of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School.  

 

Responsibilities:

Middle School Spanish Teacher

  • Prepare rigorous, differentiated lessons for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in accordance with the curriculum of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, its mission, statement of diversity, and Montessori philosophy and practice.
  • Maintain a prepared environment in the classroom and other areas used for instruction
  • Develop, review, and update curriculum as needed in conjunction with the Middle School team.
  • Facilitate the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth of each child
  • Maintain student record-keeping
  • Plan and execute student field trips
  • Build relationships and partner with families
  • Prepare student progress/grade reports for parents in accordance with the established policies of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School
  • Prepare for and participate in regular parent-teacher conferences as set forth on the school calendar
  • Prepare student progress/grade reports for parents in accordance with school policies.
  • Collaborate with the Kindergarten-Upper Elementary Spanish teacher about curriculum to ensure vertical alignment.
  • Prepare an annual statement of goals, and objectives for professional development
  • Actively participate in scheduled program level and faculty and staff meetings
  • Attend and participate in various evening meetings, such as Back-to-School Night Parent Education, as well as Community events
  • Establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and other teachers and school personnel.
  • Stay abreast of educational trends and developments
  • Know and comply with the established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School as stated in the Faculty & Staff Handbook
  • Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of School or the Assistant Head of School.
 

Advisor

  • BHMS’s Middle School maintains a strong advisory program. Each advisory includes a mixed-age group of 7th and 8th graders. The advisory groups support students’ social-emotional development, adjustment to the adolescent experience, and school life. Advisors are considered advocates for their advisees, are the liaison between other teachers and families as needed, and are a daily part of their advisees’ life on campus 
  • Provide daily support to a designated group of 8-12 students as an advisor
  • Prepare for and participate in yearly scheduled parent-teacher conferences (3 per year as set forth on the school calendar), and arrange additional meetings as necessary
  • Communicate regularly with parents
  • Work closely with the Middle School team to organize all aspects of the students’ educational experience, including diversity and equity work, running a class business, school trips, and service-learning programs 
  • Participate in all scheduled overnight trips with students and other faculty 
 

Requirements  

  • A minimum of three years of middle school experience teaching Spanish
  • Montessori Secondary I (Middle School) training, or the willingness to undertake such training
  • Master’s degree
  • A strong appreciation of middle school-aged children 
  • Knowledge of educational best practices, specifically for children ages 12-14 
  • Experience with and appreciation for collaborative planning and teaching

The salary range is $80,500-83,500 commensurate with experience, qualifications and aligned with the school’s financial landscape.
