Brooklyn Museum is seeking a solutions-driven Junior Accountant to support the finance team by maintaining financial records, preparing reports, and assisting with month-end close processes. The Junior Accountant works under the supervision of the Accounting Manager, and may assist in a variety of accounting, financial, and administrative tasks. Responsibilities
- General Accounting:
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with non-profit accounting standards (GAAP for non-profits)
- Prepare journal entries to the general ledger
- Assist with maintaining records for restricted and unrestricted funds
- Accounts Payable & Receivable:
- Prepare accounts Payable and credit card entries from the expense management system for review
- Maintain accounts receivable processing including issuing invoices, applying receipts and working with management to facilitate collections
- Monitor incoming payments, including grants, memberships, and ticket sales, and reconcile them to appropriate accounts
- Bank Reconciliation & Cash Management:
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit card statements
- Record and deposit receipts to the bank account, ensuring proper coding
- Assist with monitoring cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operations
- Financial Reporting:
- Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Assist in creating reports for the board of directors, museum leadership, and grant funders
- Compile and organize supporting documentation for audits or reviews
- Assist in preparing grant financial reports and maintaining proper documentation for audits
- Compliance & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and organized financial records for internal and external stakeholders
- Assist with maintaining the electronic files of the department
- Assist with maintaining the museums chart of accounts and mapping across various platforms
- Month-End Close:
- Prepare reconciliations and adjustments for accounts, including prepaid expenses, deferred revenue, and accrued liabilities
- Assist with fixed asset tracking and depreciation schedules for museum collections and capital projects
- Other Duties:
- Suggest process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field from an accredited four-year college or university preferred
- At least two years’ experience, preferably at a nonprofit organization required
- Experience being a key person responsible for accounts receivable preferred
- Technology savvy; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software particularly Abila MIP and Microsoft Office applications including advanced Excel skills. Tessitura experience preferred
