POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Provider, Registered Nurse and/or the LPN the Medical Assistant is responsible for the delivery of patient care in an Ambulatory setting while maintaining professional standards
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following duties are mandatory requirements of the job:
- Functions as a member of a team committed to quality patient care
- Collaborates with members of the care team including primary care physicians, nurses, office staff, care managers and others to assist in patient care
- Demonstrates ability to complete sessions based on thorough understanding of nursing and office policy and procedures
- Maintains appropriate office records (EHR), and ensures that records are up to date at the start of each session
- Demonstrates proficiency in obtaining vital signs, documents and reports findings as appropriate
- Correctly identifies patients using 2 identifiers (name and date of birth) per policy and procedure
- Assists providers and nurses with patient specific quality measures and ensures that the patients experience is excellent
- Queries patients for pain, tobacco use/readiness to quit, all structured fields, documents appropriately and reports to nurse/provider
- Reconciles patient medications and communicates discrepancies to the physician for final verification
- Demonstrates proficiency in Phlebotomy, labels specimens in the presence of patients', ensures proper handling of ALL specimens
- Understands and follows established guidelines pertaining to blood bourne pathogens and adheres to office policy regarding personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Demonstrates the ability to respond to in-office emergencies
- Reports patient safety issues/concerns to a supervisor or Director of Nursing and documents appropriately
- Assist with procedures as required and chaperones the provider during exams or procedures as necessary
- Contacts cancellations (No Shows) and schedules appointments for patient as directed by the provider/nurse
- Contacts patients to verify appointments as directed by the provider/nurse
- Maintains supply inventories and equipment necessary for the effective performance of the job
- Assist in the orientation of new clinical personnel as requested
- Participates in Practice Performance Improvement activities
- Verbalizes an understanding of their role in identifying and reporting suspected abuse according to policy and procedures
- Takes initiative to keep informed of new/revised Policy and Procedures, Standards of Care and incorporates these into practice
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
- Graduate of Accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred. Ambulatory Care Setting experience a plus
