Job Title: Ballistics Research Assistant
Job Description:
We are seeking a qualified Ballistics Research Assistant to support the efforts of the FBI Ballistic Research Facility (BRF). The BRF conducts leading Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation (RDT&E) into ammunition, firearms, ballistic protective garments, and related materials. The successful candidate will assist existing research staff in providing support to federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.
Estimated Start Date: March 14, 2025
Work Hours:
- 1500 hours per year
- Work hours may be flexible or determined based on the needs of the FBI's Ballistic Research Facility
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct RDT&E primarily focused on ammunition, weapons, and protective armor.
- Perform ballistic gelatin testing, motion analysis, and destructive weapons testing according to FBI protocols.
- Provide technical support and prepare detailed reports and presentations using common computer software.
- Assist in the preparation of precision hand-loaded ammunition for long-range precision fire assessments.
- Conduct terminal performance testing of ammunition, including velocity and accuracy assessments.
- Maintain proficiency in the use of current Bureau-issued or approved firearms.
- Occasionally provide firearms instruction/range safety support during live fire events.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in ballistic research, with an emphasis on testing ammunition, ballistic protective garments, and weapons.
- FBI (or approved equivalent) training/certification as a firearms instructor, observer/sniper, and police instructor preferred.
- Current or prior experience as a law enforcement officer is advantageous.
- Demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement firearms and ammunition.
- Expertise in ballistic research and testing techniques, including the use of Oehler Ballistic Instruments.
Clearance Level Required: Secret Clearance
