Job Title: Project Historian
Job Description:
The Project Historian will be responsible for conducting comprehensive research and developing a detailed administrative history of Congaree National Park to commerate its 50th anniversary. This position requires a deep understanding of historical research methods, excellent writing skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
Project Duration: May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2027
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct archival and primary source research at various repositories.
- Perform oral history interviews with up to 16 subjects, including current and former National Park Service (NPS) officials and community leaders.
- Analyze and interpret historical maps, photographs, and other visual materials.
- Prepare a detailed final administrative history report, including maps, tables, and photographs.
- Ensure all work meets the standards of scholarship required for academic histories.
- Participate in regular progress meetings.
- Deliver all documentation and research materials to the National Park Service upon project completion.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in historical research and documentation.
- Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and the Harper’s Ferry Center Editorial Style Guide.
- Experience conducting oral history interviews and archival research.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in History, Public History, or a related field.
- Experience with projects involving architecturally and historically significant districts.
- Knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act and NPS standards.
Location: Mix of onsite (at Congaree National Park in Hopkins, SC) and offsite work required:
Onsite work:
- Conducting formal oral history interviews with up to 16 subjects in person.
- Participating in project kick-off meetings and site visits.
- Archival and primary source research at various repositories at Congaree National Park.
Offsite work:
- Writing and preparing the administrative history report.
