Electrical Designer
12-month contract-to-hire
Windsor Mill, Maryland (2 days remote, 3 days on-site)
Primary Purpose of Position:
- Under minimum supervision, coordinates and develops complex designs, specifications, and engineering drawings for special and major projects.
- Coordinates the activities of and provides technical guidance for designers, drafters, survey personnel, and contractors assigned to special or major projects.
- Collaborates with engineers by performing such duties as preparing reports and estimates, making technical calculations, conducting investigations, and monitoring field tests and surveys.
- Identifies specifications and codes necessary to comply with requirements of governmental agencies and other utility companies and acquires necessary approvals and permits.
- Reviews project designs prepared by others for adherence to all regulatory agency and Company standards.
- Prepares layouts, sketches, material requisitions, and finished drawings for permits and construction.
- Advises contractor and Company personnel regarding solutions to special problems in design of facilities and systems not covered by formal standards.
- Makes site visits to develop and review designs for construction and to solve special construction problems.
Primary Duties and Accountabilities:
- Develop complex designs, specifications, and engineering drawings.
- Coordinate activities and provide technical guidance for project teams.
- Collaborate with engineers on reports, estimates, technical calculations, investigations, and field tests.
- Identify and comply with specifications and codes from governmental agencies and utility companies.
- Review project designs for regulatory and company standards adherence.
- Prepare layouts, sketches, material requisitions, and finished drawings.
- Advise on solutions to special design problems.
- Conduct site visits for design development and problem-solving.
- Respond to emergency events as required.
Qualifications:
- Thorough knowledge of gas and/or electric engineering and construction standards, practices, and procedures.
- Ability to develop project requirements and prepare complex designs, finished drawings, and calculations.
- Effective planning, management, and coordination of multiple work assignments.
- Interpretation of utility drawings, site plans, topographic maps, and highway construction drawings and specifications.
- Mathematical calculations, detailed field surveys, and application of standards for design requirements.
- Proficiency in personal computers and computer-aided design and drafting systems.
- Preparation of technical reports.
- Effective communication and problem resolution.
- Associate's degree in Computer-Aided Design, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or CAD. Bachelor's degree in Engineering is even better.
- Background in utility, manufacturing, large-scale commercial/industrial buildings, or data centers.
- Proficiency in substation design, electrical wiring, schematic diagrams, and updates in AutoCAD Electrical
- 3 years of experience (within the last 3-5 years) in relevant tasks.
- High School Diploma and over eight years of job-related work experience, including at least four years' experience in the design and drafting of gas and/or electric utility systems; or the equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving standards.
- Satisfactory completion of the Technical Occupations Test (TECH).
- May be required to become a Notary Public in the State of Maryland, depending on specific assignment.
