Transmission Engineer
Contract Remote; Full-time Hybrid (Glen Allen, VA - Richmond, VA)
12-month Contract-to-Hire
We are looking to hire an experienced Electrical Engineer to support one of our largest utilities clients in the Richmond, VA area. Their Transmission Planning/Modeling group has a strong impact on the development of the transmission expansions plans and support the bulk electrical system. Our client is looking for an individual who will work to secure system reliability, meet the future demands of customers, and integrate renewable energy resources.
Responsibilities:
- Perform power flow analysis in accordance with NERC Reliability Standards, PJM Planning Criteria, and Electric Transmission Planning Criteria.
- Power flow case building experience within Transmission Networks with PSS/E software. This includes processing incoming load projections from distribution companies and applying to power flow case build.
- Develop and maintain power flow and short circuit planning models.
- Development of Model on Demand project files.
- Contingency file updates.
- Facility rating updates.
- Short circuit change files.
- Facility impedance updates.
- Work collaboratively with PJM Planning, the Electric Transmission Planning Team, and the electric transmission operations engineering teams to perform annual PJM RTEP assessments, generation interconnection and retirement analysis, and develop transmission solutions to address all reliability criteria violations.
- Participate during competitive FERC Order 1000 open windows by developing innovative and cost-effective transmission solutions.
- Develop and sponsor regional transmission projects.
- This includes developing the project scope, justifying the need, presenting, and discussing the project with internal and external stakeholders, and obtaining all the necessary project approvals from PJM and The State Corporation Commission.
- Assist in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of computer-based tools for the Electric Transmission Planning Team
Basic Qualifications:
- ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering related field preferably Electrical or Civil Engineering.
- 5 years of Electrical, Power, or Transmission Systems Engineering experience.
- Experience working with Electric power systems and power flow; specifically, demonstrated usage and experience working with Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS®E or PSS/E).
- Contingency file maintenance experience
- Familiarity with Transmission System Operations.
- Transmission Planning or System Protection.
- Experience working in a control room setting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Substation Engineering experience.
- Case building experience within an ISO (e.g. MISO, PJM, CAISO, NYISO, NEISO)
- Understands functions of substation components.
- PowerGem Tara
- Short Circuit model building and analysis experience (i.e. ASPEN software experience)
- Energy Management System (EMS) ie. GE EMS
- Understands the protection practices for transmission lines, distribution feeders, and substation equipment.
- Experience and understanding of designing substations and transmission lines.
