Description

SUMMARY

The Speech Pathologist will evaluate, diagnose, and treat residents/students with speech or language disorders, formulate individualized treatment programs, keep appropriate records, and inform faculty and parents about students' progress.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

MED or MA/MS from accredited college or university; with degree in Communication Disorders and two to three years’ experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

  1. Assess client's needs for therapy and functional level and provide speech and language therapy to a variety of patients and ongoing treatment as needed, within different environments, i.e. funders, classroom and clinic.
  2. Evaluate each client in terms of the following behaviors: sucking, swallowing, biting, chewing, respiration/phonation, and sound production.
  3. Develop in conjunction with the occupational therapist, feeding/oral motor stimulation programs.
  4. Create programming to address speech goals, including rapid, precise movement of the tongue, lips and palate.
  5. Design programming for language goals, including speaking, writing, facial expressions, gestures, and manual signing.
  6. Recommend, in conjunction with occupational therapist adaptive utensils and equipment for each client.
  7. Order appropriate materials and equipment.
  8. Monitor the necessity and use of adaptive utensils and devices.
  9. Participate in meetings, committees and in services as necessary.
  10. Prepare DOE paperwork.
  11. Attend DOE staffing, FSP, IEP, reviews, and eligibility meetings as necessary.
  12. Develop and integrate augmentative communication systems and technology.
  13. Provide input to the interdisciplinary team for development of care plans for each client.
  14. Assist in incorporating carryover of speech/language goals into school/home programs.
  15. In-service appropriate personnel and families in order to implement speech/language goals for each client.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Florida Driver's License

HIV/HIPAA Certification

FIRST AID/CPR AED Certification

Valid Florida Speech/Language Pathology License

Certification of Clinical Competence by the American Speech & hearing Association (ASHA)

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in the supervision of speech-language pathology assistants.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports, notes and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
