Minimum Requirements

The Broward Sheriff's Office is now offering condensed testing for out of area candidates. Human Resources will schedule and coordinate the selection process within a short time frame to minimize travel. Applicants are responsible for all travel expenses. 

DO NOT SUBMIT THE ON-LINE APPLICATION UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE CORRECTIONS CRIMINAL JUSTICE BASIC ABILITIES TEST (CJBAT) OR THE FLORIDA BASIC ABILITIES TEST (FBAT) AND THE BASIC MOTOR SKILLS TEST AND HAVE ATTAINED ALL THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS LISTED BELOW.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR SUBMITTING THE ONLINE APPLICATION: 

  • CJBAT or FBAT
  • BASIC MOTOR SKILLS tests results from Broward College
  • Certified "entire" driving history
  • If ever arrested, submit official court disposition, police report, and written statement for review
  • DD214 Member 4 form (if claiming Veterans' Preference)
 INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Minimum age of 18 years.
  2. United States citizen prior to application.
  3. High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
  4. Must not have been convicted of any felony or of a misdemeanor involving perjury or a false statement as an adult. All other arrests and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. All candidates must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation (F.S.S. 943.13). If ever arrested, candidates must submit official court documents and police reports with the application.  A written statement explaining the arrest and the outcome must also be attached to the application for review. Official court documents can be obtained from the Clerk of the Court in the county in which the incident occurred. Documents must be submitted with your application.
  5. Must successfully pass the Corrections Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) or Florida Basic Abilities Test (FBAT) prior to submitting an application.  Test results must be submitted with the application.
  6. Must successfully pass the BASIC MOTOR SKILLS test prior to submitting an application.  Test results must be submitted with the application.
  7. If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must provide a DD214 Member 4 form  to the online application. 
  8. Must possess and maintain throughout employment, a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance. Driver license must show current address. All candidates must submit with the application, a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history.
    • Florida driving histories can be obtained at any courthouse in Broward County.  Three year, 7 year, and online Florida driving history records will not be accepted. 
    • If you have possessed a driver's license in any other state in the past 10 years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state.  For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that state's division of motor vehicles.
    • The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources
    • Driving history records must be attached to the online application.

Nature of Work

This is entry level work which provides the opportunity for practical experience and broad exposure to the fundamentals of detention functions within the Department of Detention of the Broward County Sheriff's Office.  Work involves attending a Corrections Academy intended to provide preparatory training for a career in detention.  Position participates in training programs and performs varied routine and technical non-sworn tasks in support of sworn detention functions. Employees in this classification receive supervision and administrative direction from a supervisor. Emphasis is placed on training the incumbent for continued employment within the agency.  Performs related work as directed.

All cadets attending the Broward College Institute of Public Safety must successfully attain a minimum score of 75% on at least one Physical Profile test.  Failure to attain the 75% score on one of the Physical Profile tests will result in the cadet's removal from the Academy and potential separation of employment from BSO.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

Attends a Corrections Academy intended to provide preparatory training for a career in detention.
 
Participates in training programs and performs varied routine and technical non-sworn tasks in support of detention functions.
 
Instills an understanding and appreciation of the criminal justice system and the professional ethics applied to detention.
 
Participates in varied routine and technical non-sworn tasks involving the supervision and control of detainees; enforcement of security rules, regulations and procedures; and the provision of services and information to detainees.
 
May operate an agency vehicle when appropriate.
 
Performs related duties as directed.
 
Depending on functional area of assignment, the following physical requirements may apply:
 
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, climbing, and that may involve the dragging, pushing, and/or pulling of extremely heavy objects, such as in the event of chasing and subduing a suspect resisting arrest.
 
Tasks may involve standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time.  Some tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, pathogens, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, animals.  Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Tasks may include regular exposure to traffic conditions, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions is essential in avoidance of injury or accidents.   Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment including, but not limited to, various types of body armor and safety gear.

Recruitment Information

Applicants who qualify will be subject to an extensive selection process and screening program, which may include, but not be limited to evaluation of training and experience; written test; computer based test; interview; polygraph examination; psychological evaluation; employment record, fingerprint and background check; medical examination; and drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process varies by position and could last 10 to 12 weeks. Reapplication will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
