TREATMENT COUNSELOR II $56,653 - $87,888 annually
  1. Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Sociology, Behavioral Science, or related field.
  2. Three (3) years of professional experience and/or training in delivery of counseling in substance use and/or behavioral health programs.
  3. State Certified Master’s Level Addiction Professional certification (MCAP) or State Certified Addictions Professional certification (CAP) or State Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional certification (CCJAP) at time of hire.
TREATMENT COUNSELOR III $59,531 - $92,352 annually
  1. Master’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Behavioral Science, or related field.

  2. Three (3) years of professional experience and/or training in delivery of counseling in substance use and/or behavioral health programs.

  3. Florida Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Florida Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Florida Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or Florida Licensed Psychologist at time of hire.

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to provide professional substance use/mental health treatment relating to victims, social service, addiction, and crisis intervention for clients (in the community or incarcerated individuals) of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Community Programs. Employees in this classification perform specialized and professional treatment work of a rehabilitative nature. Position is responsible for interviewing, counseling, evaluating, assessing, and providing substance use, mental health, crisis intervention and follow-up counseling to clients (in the community or incarcerated individuals) participating in programming in the community and/or while incarcerated. 


The job classifications of Treatment Counselor II and Treatment Counselor III are distinguished by the level of education, experience, and job functions. Performs related work as directed.

TREATMENT COUNSELOR I
  • Conducts program orientation/intake, assessment, and treatment planning for clients participating in programming administered through the Sheriff’s Office. 
  • Provides therapeutic services based on treatment evaluation; provides clinical case management for assigned clients. 
  • Completes biopsychosocial assessments; biopsychosocial assessment that must be reviewed and countersigned by a Qualified Supervisor. 
  • Completes treatment/case planning; treatment/case planning that must be reviewed and countersigned by a Qualified Supervisor.  
  • Conducts discharge planning and provides referrals for continuing treatment; provides follow-up contact as needed. 
  • Provides crisis intervention, individual, group and family counseling. 
  • Informs clients of legal requirements and implications concerning treatment; coordinates with various local, county, and community agencies concerning status of cases. 
  • Attends in-service training, workshops and inter-agency conferences to coordinate services; attends staff conferences for case review and consultation as needed. 
  • Maintains client files, records, and case documentation in accordance with established regulatory policies and procedures; prepares medical, casework and legal documentation for assigned clients.
  • Utilizes an electronic health record to maintain clinical documentation required for the client file.  
  • Secures assistance and cooperation of social service agencies and related community resources for meeting client needs. 
  • Performs related duties as directed.
TREATMENT COUNSELOR II
In addition to the essential functions listed under Treatment Counselor I, the following essential functions are added.
  • Is able to complete biopsychosocial assessments and treatment/case planning without being reviewed and countersigned by a Qualified Supervisor. 

TREATMENT COUNSELOR III
In addition to the essential functions listed under Treatment Counselor II the following essential functions are added.
  • Initiates Baker Acts under the supervision of a Qualified Supervisor.
  • Diagnoses’ mental health diagnosis(es) under the supervision of a Qualified Supervisor. 

Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. May require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects. Tasks are performed in a corrections environment where proper provisions are in place in terms of employee security and protection. Due to the nature and location of the work environment, tasks include potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements consistent with routine conditions in a corrections detainment environment.
