The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Environmental Project Coordinator to support the Air Program’s Ambient Air Monitoring functions within the Natural Resources Division of the Resilient Environment Department.
This is a supervisory position overseeing the activities of the field scientists (Natural Resource Specialist) in the ambient air monitoring program ensuring that the team is collecting legally defensible ambient air quality data for criteria pollutants on behalf of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
This position requires extensive knowledge in ambient air monitoring.
The successful candidate should understand and be intricately familiar with all the ambient air monitoring instruments and auxiliary equipment within the Broward County Ambient Air Monitoring Network. Activities include training staff in instrument operation, following program Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Program Plans (QAPPs), ensuring staff coverage, taking the lead in troubleshooting perplexing issues, aid in development and writing of SOPs for instrument operation, review and update program SOPs and QAPPs as needed, and evaluate and test new and emerging technology (e.g., instruments, transfer standards, and ancillary equipment) to ensure program network stays current and produces legally defensible data with high data capture rates. Responsibilities also include participating in audits performed by the FDEP and U.S. EPA, serve as a backup to field scientist in their ambient air monitoring activities, and assist in securing sampling sites and equipment following protocols during emergencies.
In addition, this position will ensure the program’s supply inventory and spare equipment repository is healthy and able to respond to emergencies to minimize downtime and meet or exceed sponsoring Federal agency requirements. It’s essential that the candidate is an excellent communicator and has strong organization and documentation skills to ensure data quality requirements are met.
Candidates are required to have U.S. Citizenship due to the grant requirements for this position and the ability to perform the essential functions of this position, including approval to access the U.S. Department of Homeland Security systems.
General Description
The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform and coordinate large-scale environmental programs and/or projects with responsibilities that include research, planning, environmental permitting, project implementation, data analysis, IT integration, and compliance, or a combination of multiple of these areas of responsibility.
This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in environmental planning, environmental science or closely related field.
Requires two (2) years in environmental/natural resource programs or closely related experience. including one (1) year of lead work/supervisory experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver’s License based on area of assignment.
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferences
Master’s degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, or related field.
PhD
OSHA HazMat Certification
Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of ambient air monitoring equipment.
One (1) year experience in State and/or Federal air databases
Two (2) years experience Agilaire Data Acquisition System
One (1) year experience performing audits
One (1) year experience in staff development/training
