General Description
The Equipment Operator with the Port Everglades Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for skilled work in the operation of large vehicles and less complex public work equipment at Port Everglades. Work involves the operation of tractors, front-end loaders, road rollers, small bulldozers, tandem axle trucks, aerial lifts, and similar equipment all generally used in public works maintenance and construction. Operators are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment and for making adjustments necessary for the particular job. Supervision is received from a superior who inspects work in progress for proper equipment utilization and desired work results.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires one (1) year operating heavy equipment related to the area of assignment or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License for duration of appointment.

Preferences
Lift bucket truck operator experience
Open trench safety experience and/or Certification
2 years experience operating heavy equipment, including but not limited to: sweeper, skid loader, backhoe, track hoe, dump truck, vacuum truck
Underground pipeline excavation experience
Drainage excavation project experience

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Transport construction equipment using a low bed semi-trailer; operates tractor trailers and tandem trucks in local hauling tasks; loading and unloading vehicles are required.

Operate front-end loader or small tractor rigged with a hydraulic loading lift and backhoe digging shovel.

Operate tractor for mowing roadway shoulders and removing vegetation from drainage ditches.

Operate sweeper truck for cleaning roadways.

May operate smaller earth-moving equipment such as small bulldozers and bobcats.

Operate various types of aerial lifts.

Perform operator pre-checks on equipment; check lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.

Perform daily maintenance on equipment, such as applying lubricants.

Make necessary minor adjustments to machine and fluid levels and report malfunctions to the supervisor.

Demonstrate knowledge of the operating characteristics of various public works equipment and vehicles used in maintenance and construction.

Demonstrate the ability to operate assigned equipment safely and efficiently and the ability to detect malfunctions while operating heavy equipment.

Perform other work as required.

Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Able to work outside of regularly scheduled work hours, as needed.

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
