The Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Transportation Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Transit Mechanic (Bus Maintenance).
**Must possess a valid Driver's License and be able to work varying shifts (days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays) at multiple work locations.**

General Description:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey-level diesel mechanic and related mass transit vehicle maintenance/repair work.

Junior Transit Mechanic wage increases are determined by the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1267 Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Starting hourly pay and increases are as follows.

1st Year:   $224
2nd Year: $23.04
3rd Year:  $23.69
4th Year:  $24.36
Thereafter Step: $33.90

Minimum Experience RequirementsPossession of a Valid Driver’s License

Requires a minimum of one (1) year automotive experience or heavy-duty equipment maintenance experience, or enrollment in an accredited vocational training program in a field of study closely related to the area of assignment.Other Requirements:Ability to work varying shifts in a 24/7 operation as assigned (days, afternoons, weekends and holidays). Ability to report to multiple work locations as needed.Special Certifications and Licenses Required:Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement within 90 days of employment.

 Preferences:
  • 608 HVAC Certification
  • Certification or Graduation from an approved vocational training program in maintenance or a closely related field.
  • One (1) year of transportation experience
  • Two (2 ) years of automotive vehicle maintenance experience
Supplemental Information: 
Upon selection, candidates must successfully complete pre-employment screening (criminal background check, medical exam, drug screen, education and employment verification, and any other Broward County Transportation Department requirements).

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Performs a variety of light journey-leveled diesel mechanic and related mass transit vehicle maintenance/repair work under general supervision.

Rebuilds/repairs a variety of equipment and/or equipment sub-systems, which may include diesel engines, hydraulic systems, brakes, transmissions, electrical systems and components, power-takeoffs, pumps, cooling systems, air conditioning, and drive lines, to cost-effectively extend the safe operating life of the equipment, minimize equipment replacement, and/or minimize equipment down time.

Performs a variety of minor equipment maintenance/repair, including replacing lights/lenses, adding fluids, lubricating, making minor adjustments, inflating tires, and/or replacing a variety of hoses to ensure safe operation of equipment, minimize major repairs, and/or prevent damage to equipment, facilities, or the environment.

Performs preventive maintenance on a wide variety of public transit vehicles and other specialized equipment to identify potential operating problems, extend the safe operating life of the equipment, maintain warranty, ensure equipment operates safely, and minimize repair costs. Such as, maintaining bus oil levels, including changing transmission fluids, filters, windshield, power steering fluids and hydraulic oil tank.

Performs Coach Service Attendant as assigned.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing, and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, traffic and moving machine
