Treatability Lab Engineer

This position necessitates a comprehensive understanding of fundamental and technical treatability testing, proficiency in analytical methodologies, and adherence to QA/QC standards. The ideal candidate should have strong verbal and written communication skills and be a highly organized and responsive individual, capable of working in a diverse team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities. Our successful candidate will have a positive, can-do attitude; will be flexible and self-motivated, creative, and quality-oriented with attention to detail. The role includes work on projects from all market sectors served by Brown and Caldwell, including drinking water, wastewater, industrial water, reuse and environmental remediation.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct laboratory analytical and treatability testing by following test plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), as well as health and safety and waste management protocols.
  • Provides engineering technical support to Research and Innovation (R&I) studies.
  • Work with vendors in close relationship with technical practices on different treatment technologies to evaluate technical feasibility and develop cost estimates for application.
  • Assist project teams in the development and preparation of technical documents including proposals, test plans, technical memorandums, health and safety assessment forms, O&M Manuals, feasibility studies, and basis of design reports.
  • Perform analysis, calculations, research, selection, and layout for projects, including conceptual planning studies, pilot or demonstration scale facilities, preliminary design documents, and detailed design plans. 
  • Works with project team to help solve complex problems
  • Contribute to the design, fabrication, implementation, and troubleshooting of pilot studies as needed.
  • Serve as a project engineer and support coordination of the work of engineers and technical staff on small and large projects.  Interfaces with client staff to gather information, propose on future work, and present findings.
  • Collaborate with project managers, project oversight staff, client service managers, staffing managers and other project personnel from other disciplines.
  • Supports BC’s relevant technical practices including Drinking Water, Reuse, Industrial Water, Wastewater, Solids & Energy, and Site Investigation and Remediation/Solid Waste.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil, Environmental, Chemical or related engineering field) is required.
  • Foundational knowledge of water and wastewater treatment principles.
  • Good technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills and ability to work well independently and in team environments.
  • Must be willing to work in the laboratory (or temporarily in the field) potentially for extended periods of time. This includes flexibility to work extended hours and weekends as needed on treatability studies.
  • Must be willing to work at least three days a week in the laboratory with the potential of 5 days a week, depending on project demands.
  • Ability to walk slowly around sites of varying size that may have areas of uneven, muddy, and/or rocky ground to perform inspections and take photographs.
  • Must be capable of performing physically demanding tasks. This includes wearing necessary personal protective and safety equipment (in the lab or in the field), standing for extended periods while observing treatability studies and documenting test conditions, lifting objects weighing less than 30 pounds, maintaining alertness and vigilance around laboratory equipment, and climbing stairs or ladders to access equipment for visual inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record may be required.
  • Candidate must be willing and able to travel, up to 10% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to three years of full-time professional experience in an environmental or water/wastewater analysis laboratory is preferred
  • Experience with Projectwise, Bluebeam, and BIM360, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and/or SpecLink are a plus.
  • Experience using engineering calculation and modeling software such as MathCAD, AFT Fathom, and/or AFT Arrow are a plus

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.  These ranges may be modified in the future. 

$70,000 - $95,000
