Hull & Company is seeking a Renewal Underwriter to join our growing team in Morristown, NJ.
The Renewal Underwriter will review renewal insurance applications and assist with new business applications to evaluate, classify, and rate individuals and groups for insurance and accept or reject applications.
How You Will Contribute:
- Examines documents such as application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, and medical reports to determine the degree of risk based on factors such as the applicant's financial standing, age, occupation, accident history, and the value and condition of the property.
- Reviews company records to determine the amount of insurance in force on a single risk or a group of closely related risks and evaluates the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.
- Underwrites or brokers renewal accounts, ensuring that all required information is obtained according to carrier guidelines. This includes completing proper applications, confirming quotes and binders in writing, issuing policies promptly and accurately, making state filings (where applicable), and ensuring taxes are paid in accordance with appropriate state laws. Secures payments on risks bound or written.
- Assists the Underwriter/Broker with the review, analysis, and underwriting of primarily renewal risks, as well as new business as directed. Rates accounts for premiums and terms, analyzes exposures for quotes for new and renewal business, and issues written indications, quotes, and binders. Uses inspection companies to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company underwriting policies.
- Works with the Underwriter/Broker to market and meet with retail agency customers to develop business and cultivate relationships in an effort to grow the book of business.
- Understands and extends company facilities, utilizing binding authorities or brokering risks when necessary to successfully negotiate placements. Assists the department with overall underwriting results.
- Ensures that coding on specific required forms is completed and utilized.
- Services and perpetuates existing business, maintaining a keen awareness of priorities.
- Instructs and trains processors and assistants, reviewing indications, quotes, binders, submissions, and policies for completeness and accuracy.
- Provides guidance and training to others in the department to help reduce the underwriter’s clerical workload.
- Fosters and improves relationships with other departments, producers, companies, and competitors.
- Provides full assistance and support for the sales and production process in the department.
- Confers with the Department Leader before underwriting or brokering unusual or unfamiliar coverages or manuscript forms.
Licenses and Certifications:
- New Jersey P&C State licensed.
Skills & Experience to Be Successful:
- Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university is desired or five years insurance experience, two years of which are as an underwriting assistant.
- Proficient with MS Office
- Exceptional telephone demeanor
- 1-3 years’ experience with excess and surplus lines underwriting agency or company
- Pursue the CIC or CPCU designation, thorough familiarity with applicable ISO manuals, forms, rating plans, policy forms i.e. coverages, exclusions, conditions and terms. (Preferred)
Pay Range
60000 - 80000 Annual
The pay range provided above is made in good faith and based on our lowest and highest annual salary or hourly rate paid for the role and takes into account years of experience required, geography, and/or budget for the role.
