Research Librarians provide research services to internal and external customers. They connect and promote library resources, services, and programs and provide leadership and training on available resources to customers. Research Librarians work under the general supervision of a Library Manager.
Typical Schedule:
Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Thursdays: 11:45 am - 8:15 pm
With rotating Saturdays
Essential Duties
1. Inform about and assist customers with using the Library
2. Develop and implement system-wide initiatives
3. Support the mission and strategic goals of the Library
- Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner and model exceptional customer service for other staff
- Meet customers' needs for information by answering questions and locating appropriate library resources, providing referrals when appropriate
- Recommend library materials and resources based on customer preferences and knowledge of the collection
- Provide help with technology such as public computers, the library catalog, and digital resources
- Develop, promote, and implement events and programs, and provide programming support for other Library employees
- Promote library services through individual instruction or conversation, public speaking, writing reviews, posting to social media, conducting workshops and in-service events, and providing community organizations with information about the Library
- Monitor and appropriately address behavior issues to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all customers
2. Develop and implement system-wide initiatives
- Assist with or conduct large-scale projects and events
- Attend and participate in staff and departmental meetings, as well as training sessions
- Provide research and digital resource assistance and training for other staff around the system as well as for customers
- Develop partnerships with community organizations
3. Support the mission and strategic goals of the Library
- Promote library programs, resources, and services to customers
- Serve on system-wide committees as assigned or required
- Maintain professional knowledge through workshops, membership in professional organizations, and reading current literature
- Work with other staff and community partners to research, write, and implement grant proposals
- Suggest needs and possible resources to Manager and assist with preparation of budget and Friends of the Brown County Library requests
- In the absence of manager, provide guidance and direction to other staff
- Perform other related duties as needed or assigned
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education and Experience
A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university; or a Bachelor's degree in a field of study directly related to the job to be performed, including or supplemented by fifteen semester credits in Library Science, plus three years of related work experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

- Complete closing duties, including clearing and securing the building
- Identify problems and take action to develop appropriate solutions or refer to a supervisor when necessary
- Make presentations to varying sized groups of youth and adults
- Effectively coordinate and direct the work of others
- Maintain a calm demeanor under stressful or unsettling circumstances
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
- Perform accurate cash handling
- Represent the Library in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner
- Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base
- Work independently with minimal supervision

- Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library

- Demonstrate proficient technology skills, including but not limited to working with the library specific software and databases, and efficient use of Automated Materials Handling system.
