Conservation Student Intern (LTE) - Extension

Assists in the creation of educational materials to reduce the incidence and severity of surface and groundwater-impacting manure spills/incidents through researching/summarizing digital, online and paper records to determine the root causes of manure spills/incidents, environmental impacts, and remediation, summarizing trends, and developing a reduction/prevention strategy.

This position is Limited Term Employment (LTE), there are no benefits associated with the position. The position is 40 hours per week for 12 weeks.Conducts on-site and off-site research, which includes data collection (from electronic, paper, and online records), data organization and analysis.

Supports the educator in planning, conducting, and evaluating educational programs relating to manure spill prevention, soil health, agricultural conservation and related programs.

Cooperates with University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension staff to expand the Conservation Professional Training program’s educational offerings.

Promotes educational opportunities provided by University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension programs.

Implements established program plans for educational programs and reports accomplishments and impacts.

Assist with evaluating and completing a summary about the project.

Performs related functions as assigned.High School Diploma
Currently pursuing (or recent graduate with) an Associates or undergraduate degree in agriculture, biology, communications, natural resources or a related subject area; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.Excellent communications skills, ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Knowledge to interpret complex situations and apply good judgements to arrive at solutions.

Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the required software, including, but not limited to (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and experience with Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey or other data collection interface.  Use of online mapping tools/ArcGIS or similar software experience helpful but not required.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to plan, promote, implement, evaluate, and report educational programs.

Ability to understand and work effectively with a wide variety of clientele.

Ability to work well as a member of a team.

Ability to maintain a high level of organization and leadership.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.

Ability to make individual arrangements for transportation adequate to meet position responsibilities and essential job functions.

Ability to work the required hours of the position.
