What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Assistant position at Brown County?
This position shares these duties among a staff of five teammates. Be a member of a team that assists professional staff with public health services in areas such as immunization program, licensing, animal bites, and clerical support functions. Bilingual staff provide health services by interpreting for clients in a variety of settings including by telephone, in office, in client homes and at community events and translating written documents.
Environmental Unit- Assist public with application and securing payment for licenses, citations, fines and/or fees and enter into the Wisconsin HealthSpace database
- Run software program to prepare licenses each year. Send out licenses and receive and enter licenses payments into Brown County financial system and HealthSpace.
- Respond to and evaluates noise and odor complaints, maintain and file report and forward reports to sanitarian for possible citation if applicable.
- Perform rabies surveillance including coordinate with local law enforcement, citizens, and animal clinics regarding animal bites, tracking individual incidents for compliance, including quarantine and vet checks and gather quarantine documentation to process until completion of case
- Review and process all incoming reportable communicable diseases and follow departmental policies and procedures based upon of type of disease incident.
- Inventory vaccine to assure adequate supply of vaccine for clinics, monitor expiration dates for rotation with other vaccine providers. Order VFC, and private stock vaccines. Maintain clinic medical supplies necessary for use at clinics and other public health programs.
- Responsible for specific duties such as running reports and entering data into the Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS) and Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR).
- Assists in the on-site set-up of vaccine clinics, including transport of vaccinations, establishing an efficient registration process and flow specific to each service site. Assesses client’s vaccination needs and ensures information is matched to their paperwork and electronic registration software.
- Responsible for answering, triaging, and/or providing immediate assistance which requires judgment, initiative, and specialized knowledge of department programs. Respond or redirect emails and faxes.
- Interact positively with internal and external customers. Communicates and interacts effectively and respectfully with employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and customers.
- Must effectively maintain full confidentiality of the client information. Knowledge of HIPAA compliance standards and all aspects of client privacy practices.

Associate Degree in health sciences is preferred. Must possess any combination of training and experience equivalent to two (2) years of clerical experience. Work with culturally diverse populations, the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team and offer excellent customer service and general computer and data entry experience are preferred.
Special Requirements:
Work schedule requires flexibility to work outside of core business hours which includes occasional early evenings and occasional Saturdays for special events.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license; must have a dependable, insured vehicle for use during work
- Must possess or have ability to obtain a valid CPR certification within one year.
